I mean, we didn't have a problem with wiping out Polio, why are we all suddenly getting all rightsy about Influenza?
Thought fucking everyone knew the basics why we haven't cured the flu.

Because there was only one polio afaik, there are many influenzas. At least that's my understanding of it anyway.

Yes exactly. There are many types of flu viruses, and the annual flu jab is made up of the four that are predicted to be most prevalent in the following season. It is quite possible to get flu following the jab, but the chances are diminished considerably.

By the way, there are currently 7 different known human coronaviruses, four are quite common and exist all round the world, three more have mutated from animal versions, most recently, before this outbreak, was the SARS virus. This reportedly killed 770 of people between 2002-3, but has not been seen since 2004!

Anyone else thing Attenborough is being a naive idiot for agreeing to appear alongside Boris Johnson (effectively a big endorsement as he's pictured alongside) when the conservative minister who previously ran the shebang is considering suing the government.

The tories are guilty environmental malpractice IMO (pretty much like the rest of us, but they're top of the list).

I don't think he is naive. It's still an opportunity to get publicity for a cause even though the idiots he is with are not really going to do very much.

Disagree. The cause has been given all the publicity it needs.

This is about delivering on an action plan - an action plan that the Tories clearly aren't interested in delivering on (says the tory that was in charge of it) - so Attenborough is only lending legitimacy to this Tory plan.

He's always avoided being political (which was previously laudable) - but frankly if he wanted "publicity" and to put pressure on to get things done he'd have held a press conference saying "Sorry - I've pulled out of this event today. In fact - I don't believe that the Tories are going to deliver and these are further empty promises. May I introduce the Tory that the Tories sacked who was striving to make this a year of real action, rather than yet another year of platitudes and inaction as the human race drives the planet to devestation..."

...that would have caused a shitstorm, and been politically useful.

I mean their green plan is a plan to be in action when they're dead.

And there will be a new party that can be like nah fuck that.

Kicking the can down the road, if you think climate change is real and you think the tories are doing something about it. You're deluded.

Or perhaps he has a tiny bit of hope that they will do the right thing. So instead of pissing them off he can try a more encouraging approach.

Who knows what his reasoning really is but I don't think he is naive.

I think he clearly is.

He's sat on his hands his entire life presenying nature programmes in full knowledge of what's going on since the 1960's but not wanting to "lecture" as it's a "turn off".

I'm sorry, David, but that has been proven to be a mistake. You've wasted your global platform when you should have been getting your hands dirty.

Climate change denier in saying you can't look at your own countries shortcomings unless you first fix the whole world non-shocker.

Calling the 1980's. Hello, yes? Do you want your debunked idiot argument back?

But I thought we were a really really important nation in the world, probably the 2nd or so, so surely we could use that influence over countries to get them to be a bit greener?

We have been polluting the planet for 100 years or more. Not just the 80s. You make a really strange argument.

Just made a wee batch of fairy cakes. Haven't made any in ages. 90% happy with them. Didn't have any vanilla extract, but tbh you don't really need it. Taste fine. 20200204_222237.jpg

But it is.

Denier.
So you 100% know that all the factors of the warming earth are to do with man. Its not that we are coming out of the mini ice age still? As well as man in releasing co2? The earth is a dynamic system. It doesnt remain the same. If you know 100% that the earth would not have warmed at all in the last 150 years without mans influence then you should publish a paper with your proofs tbh.

How do you explain the link between global warming and the industrialisation of the planet? Coincidence?

Don't ask him.

We've got the proof. The work has been done. He 'disagrees' but can't produce his proof (because the onus is on him).

The onus is on deniers to prove they're not tinfoil hat nob-ends - but they can't...

The only person to blame here is the person illegally riding an e-scooter.
Oh and also probably the government/police for not actually enforcing the law in this.

'I don't blame driver for Emily's e-scooter death'

I see loads of these around now. I'm surprised there haven't been more deaths they way people use them.
Saw a parent with their primary school kid whizzing down the road on a single scooter in heavy traffic the other day. :censored:

Illegal here and there has been a crackdown on them recently; I saw a Garda pulling some hipster over the other day. In Europe tho...I was in Helsinki a few weeks ago and they were everywhere, rental ones just lying in corners, Brussels was the same. Be interesting to see their accident stats.
