Medical student loans can easily go that high. Eight to fourteen years of higher education where you earn almost nothing, the interest alone makes it hard to put a dent in it.

Student loans in the USA will likely cause the next big financial crisis. That said, if you do a degree and end up with that much debt, you have to take the highest paying jobs, can't fuck about doing charity work. or rather, you can, but 10 years of non profit work to wipe it away. That's a tough sell. Most people I know with a medical degree didn't start making a dent in their student loan until they were in their mid to late thirties. Once that's paid off, they can be rolling in the dough.
