And the obvious next step is to allow full internet access and the test becomes irrelevant.
Not at all. I know you've not experienced it - but a decent university education (such as you'd get at Cambridge) involves examination that requires you to interpret, think, postulate, build supporting argument, evidence by example amongst myriad other things.

ie. Not something you can look up answers for, like on the lower rungs of the educational ladder.

There's a whole world of difference between those exams and shitty GCSE's. University education not only tests knowledge but examines how you think.

It's on the West Highland Way, very popular with bikes - it's just before a section called the Devil's Staircase so named because farmer would nip over to Kinlochleven, get too drunk, die on the way home.

I'm referring to the testing we have know, exams will have to morph to allow for instant fact retrieval, we cannot move to the next level by having people remember facts, even Einstein was critical of fact retention.
But of course it will then move on to help you think, the 'internet' as it may be will be your constant tutor, though of course in the real world facts and how to think will probably be adjusted to the latest Twitter storm.
It's not going to be that different to the wide approach used in University, though I would say very few students actually catch on or gain the benefits of the deeper range of education, except it will be much deeper and wider than can be taught in a classroom with people writing down notes, and can be individually tailored , unlike the scenarios in so many lectures of bored students.

All my uni exams were open book. Its applying the knowledge not just regurgitating it.

This is what job doesnt get

Most of my exams had internet access, didnt need it to "look up answers", the few who i know did found themselves generally performing poorly because they wasted time googling rather than thinking

I do 'get it', what you dont get is that all the skills taught can be replaced...and have to be replaced in the face of AI.
If humans are to stay ahead of our own creation we have to use them as a ladder and not let them do the work.
If we carry on as usual we will be left behind, teaching facts , and all the wider aspects of context and challenging views, even the confidence that uni gives you can easily be automated.
It is very difficult for people to let go of all that goes with education, the elitism, snobbery, friendship, open of horizons and acceptance into a club.
But we have to...because we are up against a giant and have to 'think outside the box', real quick.
