So the BBC wouldnt cough up 20 million for Bakeoff...because their funds are no limitless.
They paid 204 million for Motd which struggles to get half the viewers as Bakeoff.
I'll repeat that 204 million for the highlights.

To make a comparison, bakeoff should be worth 400 million for just the highlights.

BBC Sport has a ring fenced budget; the MOTD money was found by sacrificing other sports coverage. It would the same for GBBO; they'd have to find the cash from Food (I think) which I would imagine has less to play with than sport and was probably already spending a big chunk of their budget on Bake Off anyway.

I read like 20 million people watch the show

That doesn't take away from the fact that it is a show about baking bread and cakes. With zero advice on how to make them. Just a bunch of people watching an oven for the most part.

Top Gear gave zero advice on how buy or fix a car, because it's job was entertainment; just like Bake Off or Master Chef. Don't complain about what a show doesn't do when it was never designed for that purpose in the first place.

As it turns out, Bake off has stimulated lots of people to try baking anyway.

Well, exactly. And while I don't like bakeoff I am not that bothered its on. I would be bothered if the BBC had paid stupid money for what is essentially a tent.

Whilst I agree that the design has problems the article notes that Hinckley is behind other reactors of the same design and should learn from their mistakes. Also the risk is carried by EDF and China. The UK isn't paying fot it directly. We are paying the strike price for the leccy.

Also yes, newer design reactors make more sense but aren't quite there yet. We can have them when it makes sense to do so.

Just to be a bit of a twat; the same thing could be said about motd.

Zero advice on how to play football. Just a bunch of guys kicking a ball around for the most part.

I don't find the Danish version of the bakeoff that entertaining either, but I don't mind it. £20 million does sound a bit steep though

To put Bake Off vs MotD into context:

Bake Off - £25m per year for 11 episodes plus spin-offs
MotD - £68m per year for 41 episodes (based on 15/16 season) plus World cup / Euros and spin-offs

My wife and I watches Bake off if/when we can catch a short marathon on BBC America (they sometimes run 4-5 episodes a day). It's entertaining and you get some inkling to start baking.
Good times.

Actually, they do. Its the analysis bit and most people fast forward through Shearer and Danny Murphy droning on and playing with light pens.

Irish version of Bake Off is shite, and like Top Gear, the format is less important than the cast, which is why moving to C4 without them is a waste of time (Top Gear also had crappy international versions to demonstrate that point even before Evans and co took over)

97% of people watch Bake Off because Mary Berry is a national icon.

I've read that the latest favourite to take over Top Gear since the ginger one left is Paul Hollywood, which again shows that the Beeb really don't get it. Top Gear 2002 - 2015 worked not only because the of the relationship between the 3 Amigos, but because, certainly in the case of Clarkson and May, they were also credible motoring journalists, so when they said a car was shit, there was a bit of weight behind the opinion. Of the new cast, only Harris had that kind of authority, and sadly he was a bit hamstrung by the scriptwriters clumsy attempts to make it funny.

And no, I'm providing a source for this, as the first hit I see on Google is for the Daily Mirror, and I'd rather quote Huffington Post than that third rate misery peddler.

Hollywood is a car nut and a successful amateur racing driver, and hes fat, so he would appeal to mr ordinary, plus he doesn't prattle on like Evans.

I reality they would have to beat his Bakeoff salary by a huge amount to convince him to move.
