Not really. Gay people aren't asking for the state to physically remake them, supply hormone treatments for life etc.

I'm pretty ambivalent about transgender issues tbh; with the best will in the world, you can cut bits off, add bits on and fill yourself full of hormones, but there's still going to be a Y chromosome floating about that tells a different story (and yes I'm aware there are occasionally women with Y chromosomes; there's always edge cases in life). So you can be something else, even a "woman" depending on whatever society decides a woman is, but not a female in the biological sense.

I also think what is statistically a very small number of people gets a massively disproportionate amount of media coverage; got some good PR going on there.
