I remember an article a few years back in the grauniad that said yes, actually, it is. It's the middle class university types pushing out the working class.

Larks Lane in Liverpool is a wonderfully bohemian area but in the 60's, before it became a focal point for arty-types it was a downright shithole. The problem lies in the fact that the poor cannot afford to be arty types any more - being arty and 'hipster' is a middle class preserve 'cause it takes cold hard cash to be that.

So if you see hipsters taking over an area it's because mommy and daddy are probably funding their out-there business venture and the locals in the area can and will pay £3.50 for a bowl of, rather than box of, coco-pops.

Meanwhile, the poor. Well*...
