And they're only just now getting media coverage.. Finding that rather disgusting that they've been able to operate for such a long time.

Arguments against stuff like that by using religion is just bullshit.

I think they do more damage debating it with people, if they just shut up and put their fingers in their ears and screamed 'la-la-la-la-la' they'd get more credibility.

But...they have a sincerely held belief. Which makes it OK. Apparently.

The most recent one I watched was Ken Ham vs Bill Nye, it was great. Some of the stuff creationists come out with is just plain hilarious.

I just don't get it though - The Church is losing people hand over fist (well, I guess more people are classing their selves as Christian but in reality on agnostic..)

I don't understand why the Church can't adapt and just be like, ah, shit, maybe we got that one wrong.

It wouldn't be the first time.

To be fair, most mainstream churches don't take Genesis and its timeline as a literal account; that's just the Young Earth creationist whackos.

Regardless of all the posturing, I do keep a small part of my brain primed with the fact they COULD be right.
God might just be fucking with us.

Been discussed on here before. Any God that's fucking with you like that is unworthy of your worship. Of course its entirely possible that the people running this simulation are fucking with us for science, but they're also unworthy of your worship.

I always liked the norse/greek/etc god mythos where the gods don't really "require" worship and f*ck with humans because it's fun.

Only because of the brainwashing you received earlier in life. The whole religion thing is forced on you when you brain is in a delicate stage of development. Its mental child abuse.

I went to a CofE primary school and it took a long time to fully reject the bollocks that was imprinted on my young mind.

I find that the old gods were in place to justify normal human behaviour - Raping & Pillaging whereas the new gods are there to control, and that's their original goal - to reverse that of the old gods, that's why the new gods have had done an amazing job to pacify the planet (in some respects - would we be in a similar positions terms of technology and advancement as a species if the old gods weren't replaced with the new? - I don't know.

I just believe in the 21st century the time for religion has moved on, states and governments have replaced religion as a controlling mechanism, obviously you'll have abuses of that (North Korea, Soviet Russia, other tyrannical regimes) - But equally there's tyrannical leaders who use religion to control the masses - ISIS, Mugabe etc.

Common sense trumps religion in this day and age, unless religion takes a step back and accepts that it's new position would merely be a position of community and togetherness as opposed to the preaching - but that would be stepping down from a pedestal which wouldn't go down well.

Ha! Did the last 2000 years pass you by? :p Christianity has caused more wars, persecution and death than any other "thing" We would also be lightyears ahead technologically speaking if Christianity was never invented.

I don't know.

Medieval Europe - Religion was the driving force behind technology and such - alternatives are questionable, but without a shadow of a doubt, it was better than having the old gods who would have wanted the earths population to stay low, because everyone was killing each other.

Infact, at the fall of the Carolingian Empire, it was the Church that tried to hold Europe together by telling people not to fight each other.

In some respects they've done wonders in controlling people, it's probably in the last 300 years or so when it's truly become a negative feat.

Christianity as a rule has caused conflict by stopping conflict in the past - they pacified North Europe because they were getting bored of being raided by them.

Then the Muslims - Well, it's like having two super powers - it's just natural conflict really. I just did a Crusading module, it's quite interesting because prior to the Crusades the Church had never really supported violence in the name of the Church, and it was a big oo-arr over allowing the Crusade.

Probably not true, but difficult to prove either way, except...scientific progress was stagnant in the Roman world for hundreds of years before Christianity became the official religion, and there were plenty of other parts of the world during the so-called Dark Ages that were barely touched by Christianity, and they didn't end up light years ahead of Europe technologically either (they did a bit, but not enough to suggest Christianity was slowing things down that much)
