Nothing. Golf isn't an auto-elite standard :p Like said, not with Job on this.

Well that's the thing, i wouldn't be friends with anyone who treated me different on my wealth. Works other way too, couldn't care less if my friends are millionaires or poor as rats.

You -would- though, that's the thing, everyone does, if you're in financial shit, and you go to the bar with a millionaire mate, and he knew you were in the shit, and he asked you to get your round in, you'd be like wtf?

Maybe not in that instance, but over time, it grinds everyone down.

No, i wouldn't. 100% no. Neither would any of my friends(and have not).

I get what you're saying, but i'm saying that if it grinds you down then you're not much of a friend.

Anyone saying "everyone would/could/does" is basing way too much on their personal life to make rules :p

EDIT: That being said, if i was a millionaire then none of my friends would be paying for sh*t.

Ooh Toh, I know that sounds nice but it isn't really. I put a lot of thought in to this and I've come to the conclusion that not letting your friends get you stuff or pay their way demeans them. Friends do stuff and get stuff for each other. That's part of being friends, and if you take that away you're eroding that friendship. It's not the content that is important, it's the message. Tbh it's a really hard thing: you can't help everybody, you have to keep your friends in their own value, and you have to let yourself treat them (and yourself) to fun stuff.

I meant the example given there where the rich guy expects people to get stuff. I wouldn't be going "i got that, and that, no no i'll buy that", but i wouldn't expect them to buy a round just because.

Also depends on the friend circles, if my friends went out on their own then yeah they'd be paying, but if i asked people out and didn't have to worry about money then i'd certainly pay. Basically a "let's go out i'm buying", which we already do.

Works both ways though doesn't it, if you're rich and you don't buy stuff, you're seen as a tight arse, but if you're rich and you buy everything for everyone you're seen as patronizing ;)

True, though i always go back to "F*ck those people" :p

Best bet is just to live life like you live. I for one am happy as is, millions would just help me help others if they need it. Like say friend needing a place to stay, or setting up a clubhouse to play D&D/MtG in/crash after bar. Fun stuff. I don't think i have any need for "serious" use of money.

Saw a thing in tv the other day about a lottery winner buying his best friends houses after his win. Said it killed the friendship because they always felt indebted to him.

Just bought the beta of Elite: Dangerous (really cool website btw) - I've not looked forward to a game so much since, erm...

Pulled out my joystick (not dusted it off) and about to boot that bad-boy up right now :D

I've got 4 mates who have done very well for themselves... and not a gcse between them..now they are rich they have stopped going the game and taken up golf so they have somewhere nice to park their 60 grand cars.
Even the municipal over the river from us is full of middle class wannabes.

After much careful consideration, I have decided that your bad aids has completely overtaken your brain, and has turned you into a dribbling retard.

Golf is no more elitist than any other sport. An exclusive golf club is no different to an executive box at Old Trafford, it's just one end of the spectrum. You can spend £300 on a round at Wentworth or St Andrews, or spend a fiver on a pitch and putt.

It is a bit tho really... Even low-level clubs have dress codes.

Anything with a dress code is designed to keep the lower classes out...

Not a dress code but the right type of shoes. Don't want to go playing in trainers etc. but you have a dress code to play ice hockey or swimming. Same way as you have a dress code to play golf.

I have played I jeans and t shirt before.

But always used the right shoes cause they help you play better with the spikes for grip.

You have to wear special shoes to go 10 pin bowling, is that elitist too?

And yet I've played at St Andrews in jeans before now. Y'know, the most famous golf course in the world? Which is also a municipal... ie anyone can play it.

You're being disingenouous. You wear ice hockey or swimming kit because it's necessary - that's why it's called kit.

Footwear notwithstanding a shitload of golf courses make you wear a shirt and big gay slacks - for one reason only.

No. That's kit so you don't mark the polished wooden floor. But you can go 10 pin bowling in shorts and a skanky t-shirt.

ie anyone can play it.

It's a cherry-picked example. A shitload of golf courses enforce rules to keep the riffraff out.

How many football stadia do that?

A polo shirt

Clothes of cunts :)

Face it - if you have to dress out of the ordinary to get in somewhere then it's clearly discriminatory. Fucking polo shirts. Lol! I'm far from riff-raff but I ain't dressing to fit in just because a bunch of intolerant wankers don't like chavs there.

I will amend my opinion slightly - golf is only *slightly* elitist - but it's definitely rammed full of the intolerant.

I wear polo shirts most of the time. Not out of the ordinary round town here. What's your regular attire? Shell suit in pink?

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. Of course golf is elitist . The top 37% of the population by socio economic group have Golf participation rates of about 3%, the remaining 63% have a participation rate of just over 1%. It doesn't mean there aren't more elitist sports, but its a bit silly to deny that golf is basically a middle class (and above) game. In the UK its still a pretty sexist one too (much less so in Europe).
