Lidl are great if you want some goodies from other countries that normal supermarkets atleast in Sweden dont have in stock or have market up the price alot on. Their other items are pretty much the same price as Willys and same brands, might have some cheap beers but tried a few brands that i pretty much threw right out.

I thought you had to buy beer in the official booze shop (systembolaget? blimey, dragging that one out of my memory) in Sweden?

Nothing special at Aldi this week apart from the exceptionally good Montebuena Rioja 2009 for a mind blowing £5.99 which is a fantastic price for a wine scoring so highly in reviews...

"The 2009 Montebuena is 100% Tempranillo. Dark ruby-colored, it offers an appealing perfume of spice box, leather, tobacco, and blackberry. On the palate it is packed with ripe fruit, has outstanding concentration, and impeccable balance. It is a great bargain that offers a sneak preview of the great 2009 vintage in Rioja and northern Spain in general. It should drink well for 6-8 years."

It really is an excellent drink if you like a nice red, scored 90 Parker points in reviews too.

Just to be boring - and you are by no means alone in this as supermarkets and even specialist outlets often do this - but this wine has 0 Parker points. I sincerely doubt he's even heard of them.

The Montebuena Tempranillo has been reviewed on behalf of the Wine Advocate by Jay Miller and has 90 Jay Miller points. That is 90 points out of 100 on a scale where 60=0.

That said it looks bloody good for the money and if I hadn't moved away from my local Aldi, I'd be buying some.

Works a little differently here in the U.K. as supermarkets are huge, controlling over 90% of the retail food market. Everything is made on contract food orders, so Kellogs make their own cereal but then all the other brands make their own stuff plus all the supermarket chains own label cereals. The same applies right across the supermarket spectrum, from Harvey Nichols right down to Netto. Most of the stuff in supermarkets is recipe identical from one supermarket to the next and also really close in quality to the branded stuff, just made to order for the supermarkets and in cheaper or supermarket branded packaging.

Going back to Wazz's comments at the start, all Waitrose own brand stuff is made at the same places Sainsbury, Tesco, ASDA, Aldi and the others have thier food contracts fulfilled. For instance, most of Waitrose premade bread is made by Allied Bakeries who also make nearly all the bread that Aldi stock. The only thing Waitrose are doing differently is marketing and packaging the food as a higher end product for the aspirational customer who is prepared to pay more to be seen to be buying Waitrose.

Luckily alot of the middle class have copped onto this since the recession started, all of the broadsheets have carried specials on the discount supermarkets, how they operate and the quality of goods. The vast majority of those articles are overwhelmingly positive from a quality and value perspective. So who is right, Wazz or the world? :p

Richard Bampfield reviews the Lidl wines as well iirc.

Home Page of Richard Bampfield, Master of Wine

A wine master, trusted reviewer and very much in the know. I get what you are saying about the Parker points, people are just taking the scoring system and applying it in their own reviews. That said, it really comes down to the person giving the review then, if a complete novice is giving his opinion then it isn't going to carry the weight of someone such as the guys above.

The Montebuena Tempranillo does indeed look like a great bottle of wine though, especially at that price. Planning on picking some up tomorrow. :)

Oh and I grabbed a bottle of the Grappa Prosecco, will make a post when I can sit down and enjoy a drink properly.

Well if i miss the Systemet, since sometimes they close so early.. (18:00) I can go and buy a six pack or two 3.5% at any store, and Lidls beers dont tend to be that tasty.

Waitrose do a lot of stuff I don't see in any other supermarkets, and that's the stuff I normally buy from there. So while that is the case with a fair bit of stuff, it's not everything in the shop like you seem to think it is.

Hang on, you don't shop in other supermarkets, you told us that! :p

So, what do they do that can't be got elsewhere? A few nice bakery items, sure. After that you are stretching bud.

They recently had a range of Heston Blumenthal recipe pies, which were fucking incredible.

But wait, you can get them at Lidl, right?

The only pies you need to buy are Pieminister. every other bought pie is fail.

Or you can just make your own, easy to do.

Don't be daft taB, Wazz is all knowing, all seeing, all tasting. His £4 pies are miles better than the ones Sainsbury's do for half the price!

Chav pies mate. Waitrose don't sell them, Heston didn't bake them with his own fair hands, therefore they are council estate food and not worth of a mention on this forum! ;)

Exactly my fucking point.

Yes and your point was fucking stupid. You can get fantastic exclusive stuff at any supermarket for premium prices. Some of the continental stuff Lidl get in stock for specials has never even been imagined at your precious fucking Waitrose.

They were much nicer than the Pieminister pies. At least the Chicken/Ham one which has a direct equivalent was much better. And they were £3. WHAT A FUCKING RIP OFF, EH!?

I'll have a nice Aberdeen Angus steak pie from M&S instead, only £2 and fucking lush. ;)

Good god. You lot really are plumbing new depths here, arguing about who's got the better supermarket.

I go to whichever one is closest, so usually the local Morissons. They've normally got offers on Pepsi and Relentless, so does my weekly diet just fine. I'm fairly certain you can buy food from there too. So I'm told.

I like your style, just get all your calories from liquid and remove the risk of bowel cancer altogether! :D

Oh and Wazz started it! :p I made the thread to post about food/drink offers, no harm in that is there?

No idea if these are international for Lidl, but jelly beans, with that american logo on it(same as with the butter toast) go get 'em. Bubblegum etc flavor, nice sized bag(think it's a 200g) for about 2€.

Yum yum.

Is it the original Jelly beans, or is it jelly bean factory though? Both are nice but there is a difference. . .

Useful thread!

+1 on the Raven post about a good butcher, we've had some brilliant meat from local butchers compared to stuff in the supermarket.
