@Big G and @TdC it is clear tonight in Oslo so I may see the Northern Lights. What camera settings do you recommend?

Quick advice:

- get somewhere dark
- tripod mount essential
- wide angle / standard zoom required
- use full manual mode on your camera
- disable flash
- open the aperture as fully as it will go
- use the self timer function (2 second will do) to prevent camera shake of trigging the shutter
- manually focus the lens (probably need to use live view to ensure accurate focussing, use a distant illuminated object)
- set the ISO accordingly (start with ISO 800, adjust as required)
- set the shutter length to ~15 seconds

Practice all the above outside in the dark before shooting so you're used to doing it. If the above settings are too dark, then:

- increase ISO to ISO 1600 or:
- increase shutter length to 30 seconds

If it's overexposed:

- reduce ISO to ISO 400 or:
- reduce shutter length

Again - practice practice practice!

Big G beat me to it, but yeah, that's basically it. Pro tip I learned in Iceland: don't be drunk :)

also, as G says turn off your autofocus. Set your manual focus to infinity. if you can't turn off the AF, pre-focus on anything you can that is as far away as you can find.

I got this on Hogmanay.
No tripod with me so just taken from the ground. The stars look bright because they're slightly out of focus.
30seconds, ISO1600.

Ask them to stand still.

Or, in this case perhaps, ask them to stand still and use a flashgun to illuminate otherwise dark subjects.

You can also get a remote shutter release (it says remote but it really just means moving the shutter button off of the camera body, mine is still cabled) and have complete control over the length of the exposure. I do this for fireworks.

Yeah but to stand still out side. There must not have been any wind etc cause their skirt isnt blurred at all.

Well you can also take multiple exposures and combine them together in software. Useful when taking longer exposures like star trails, when you want the foreground properly exposed too.

In this case it was just a still night, a bit of light painting with my smartphone, plus alcohol.

@Yoni Making me homesick. I miss taking the dog for a walk in the woods when it's clear, bright, you can see your breath, cold and crunchy underfoot.
