I read The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy years ago. They're all great books although tRotK gets a bit tiresome with its semi-religious prose.

I thought the films were excellent. Of course they're different from the books, books rely totally on imagination. Films rely totally on visual and audible senses.

Now fuckoff and sing some Tom Bombadil, stupid boring LOTR nerds. You're as bad as the Star Wars "we hate George Lucas" idiots.

Yep, I have read the hobbit three times and lotr twice. For me the films create what I have always imagined. I don't need a film that copies the book exactly, the story is the same and it is enjoyable to watch.

no he wasn't. TB is a brilliant idea. there's only one other like him you know, and that's Goldberry. in fact, besides Goldberry, every other being in Middle Earth could be considered TB's servant were he but to wish it.

You just want to be him.

Tom Bombardill is thought of as being a character to 'overlook' by loads of Tolkien followers. Infact I don't even bother reading that part of the book and overlook it intentionally.

I agree with reformed :p I hate all the bollocks about taking the ring to the volcano and fighting orcs. So I only read the bits where they are in hobbington. I do will say though its alot better than reading the whole thing. Tool...

How can you overlook Tom? I guess Tolien would disagree aswell. You are not allowed to be a fan so go away and read Cat in a Hat please.

Well, because it's NOT one of the best films ever. It's incredibly overrated, it's the product of a capable director, a decent script and LOADS of cash. If you can see past that you'll realise that it's actually an average film. It's by no means bad, but it's really not one of the best films ever.

I said this once in an oscar debate and Da Gaffer tore me apart. I'm sure at the time everyone agreed with him. I said they shouldn't have cleaned up and I'm still right to this day :).

I enjoyed them. They are good fun. They are still overrated.

Ask Randal, he sums them up perfectly in 70 seconds (esp. the part where he dodges the gap).

Nah. Old Tom was a throwback to some other idea Tolkien had. Didn't belong in this novel at all. The whole Tom bit was too far fetched. Not only that he just happened to live close to the Shire. Nah it was fairyland style which didn't gel with the rest of the novel one bit. I didn't always overlook the Tom part. I have read that section a number of times and probably will again, but I could see that it broke the flow of the novel and the book reads that much better for jumping over old Tom's forest. Once you do that Tom is hardly referred to by anyone again.

Who the hell are you to mess with Tolkien's book, and how its supposed to be read? I'm pretty certain that he wouldn't like you doing that.

Don't suppose he would but then again I ain't re-writing the book and redistributing it - which is what the film guys are doing. The nerve of some people :touch: . Are you only upset because I am ditching the part of the novel with the same name as you? Whenever I start to read that part of the novel I always feel like I should be dressed up in pixie clothes or something and start dancing around in Tom's fairy grotto.

Never really cared about the whole Lard af tha rings before these movies came out, don't much care for it now. Not to mention some of the 3d in the series is appauling. Sure a nice way to spend 10hours on the bottom of your sofa on a hangover day, guzzling liquies and munching treats. But for movie experiences...something else.

The hobbit? Another movie about it. Nothing special, nothing "exiting" and sure as hell don't care if the PJ's are directing it or not. Director rarely contributes so much to an item on interest so tiny that it actually would make a difference.

To me.

I bet from a technical point of view it will change how some aspects of the film are told, but i'd like to see a non-fan direct such a higly overhyped book. Just to see what would happen. Why overhyped? Because until PJ brought it out with the new movies, it was the most uberly guarded secret that noone told anyone they had read and yet it remained as the one dominant known fact about nerds. The Nerdiaga Superioca if you will, preceeding star treks/wars/trips/rumbles.

But that's just my comment.

partly true. Tom Bombadil is a reference to a doll one of Tolkien's daughters had. Tolkien wrote stories about the doll.

Tom and Goldberry are extremely unreal and far fetched because they are extremely unreal and far fetched. They are of the Valar. Essentially gods, or extremely powerful alien beings from another plane of existance, or whatever explaination you want. The chapter on Tom is filled with clues about this, and if you read the Silmarilion properly you may be able to deduce who they are. They appear to the Hobbits as jolly hobbit/elf/pixie-esque creatures because they can, and because they know that the true nature of their aspect would possibly disturb the Hobbits. They sing alot because that is what Valar tend to do: sing songs of creation and destruction. The songs are power, and Tom commands the Wight and Old Man Willow by singing and they instantly obey even though they are powerful entities in their own right.

Tohtori, Peter Jackson isn't just a Director, he's got a whole design studio and creative team behind him, as well as his wife and Pippa something who did the writing so well. To not have Peter means to not have these things and that means we may not, or rather, almost certainly will not get the same attention to detail we had in the Trilogy.

they weren't!

they adapted and re-interpreted the book in order to make a film.

an entirely different artform.

why can't you grasp that simple concept?

simply not true my friend, though it does vary in the degree to which they contribute and how greatly it differs.

Ah yes but i meant that for an interest, -to me-, so tiny it matters not who directs it :)

Pete Jackson did a good job on LotR.
Pete Jackson did not do a perfect job on LotR.

Hence there is room for improvement and it is feasable that someone else could do it better. Hence it is no catastrophe that Jackson isnt allowed to do The Hobbit. With any luck we will get someone that tries even harder to stay to the letter of the books, which many of us believe would have made for even greater movies.

Name me a director that has done a 'perfect' job on any adaptation. Whether it be book, game or poem.

I think he did a bloody excellent job myself and would challenge anyone to do better. He even lost 2 thirds of his bodyweight too by the looks of it (extra points).

All art is open to interpretation and is massively subjective. Even if the original artist had a specific idea in mind. If you don't like it, don't look at it. I assume the reason you enjoyed the trilogy originally is because of the books . Therefore the film should have no real bearing on your subsequent enjoyment. It is merely another media form for those of us with shortened attention spans to enjoy a pretty legendary story.

I thought King said it was nothing like the book and disowned the whole project. There was a made for tv remake a few years back that is apparently how King wanted it making.
