Was just curious as you seem to be lodged up their bumhole ;)

Only kidding, just seems you're making pretty bold sweeping statements with no real explanation.

Im just stating, before we had the Unions we (atleast in denmark) had 12 hours shifts 7 days / week and no vacation. If you had a problem you were kicked out. (We had high unimployment rate) so it wasn't really easy to get a new job. The Unions kept people together so the striked (sp?) if the fired one with out reason. Thats why we got better work conditions today!

i dont think its just unions. in the UK we also have legislation to help you if your employer treats you like shit.

unions are not inherently bad
They can be good in things like unfair dismissal and work place bullying etc

But to strike over pay is stupid

1. if everyone got a raise above inflation then inflation would go up even higher
2. Interest rates would go up
3. More strikes for more pay rises because inflation is so high and so are interest rates

And for the pension arguments well most companies have now canned their final salary pension schemes and replaced them with worse ones so why should the post office be any different at trying to change theirs.

To strike for those reasons is insane.

Suck it up or get a new job

Use the unions for rights and un fair things that happen not just for more money

I'm laughing because the minimum legal protections are pretty shit, all things considered.

They only exist because of collective bargaining by employees. Hell, the labour party only exists because of the unions. Though they don't like to talk about that any more.

Yeah tbh J, I don't get pay rises inline with inflation, but because I dont work for an essential public service I can't strike and cripple the nation.

And posties used to be good, now I hardly ever see the same one and they can't tell the difference between Woolwich and woolworths.

We haven't had a pay rise in rate with inflation yet!, I'm just pointing out how far below the rate of inflation we've been for the past 10 years (the time I've been working for Royal Mail).

The reason your postman is now so shit is because the managers believe in sending out untrained staff to do the jobs of people who are sick, add to that the single working delivery that they started this year and you get a postie that has to deliver 6x16Kg bags of mail in one run.

I could go on all day but just thinking about the damn place makes me feel :puke:

how much training does it take to pick up the mail from those little boxes at the end of the road that we have now. Put it in a sack and then read the envelops to find out which door it needs to be stuck in ?

I know the back end sorting office etc takes a bit more training but essentially i used to do the same thing as a paper boy when i were young it cant be that much different

Well a read of all of these posts (the sensible ones) just make it clear it's a large catch 22 situation where noone will win. Royal mail are going down the pan, and to make it easier on them, and their customers, they're staff suffer, and as a result they're not happy, strike, forcing RM into a situation thats not helping their own cause - when they stand their ground, the public lose out.

I don't see how it's likely to be remedied. Lots of people would be happy on 300 a week - certainly the immigrant workers. (another argument there entirely). End of the day, the public are being screwed if we like it or not :|

No bot you would live in 1900 (work wise) if we didn't have the unions!
To quote you:

yeh but we don't live in the 1900s any more. I'm sure the unions did lots of great stuff back then, who cares, that was like 100 years ago.
In the 21st century I don't want my services screwed up, hell I want to have a choice and alternative to Royal Mail, they suck anyway and have been getting shitter and shitter, Unions in Britain have a bad rep for being militant holding holding the country to Ransom, something Maggie Thatcher Fixed massively though,
But the general perception of the Unions by the public in the UK is completely different to those from the continent anyway.

I think you will probably find that directives from the E.U will do more to "protect workers" than than any union ever could.

Edit, I also wouldn't mind picking up £300 a week even before deductions.

What a great guy, I like you. While that may seem a nice thing I do tend to stalk and sex people sometimes, but even so you come across as a top bloke to me.

I love my postman and I will not hear a bad word said against him.

If anyone's interest in what's going on with Royal Mail and the CWU, here's a link from the CWU's website Clicky.

Cheers, always good to get the sides of the story properly (without the rumours, hearsay and other guessing).

Better to be constructive than moronic.

LOL at the people whos response is 'quit and find another job'.

I got made Redundant from the Civil Service in May another government scheme to get everyone onto benefits :)

I am well qualified in various jobs managment etc and companys will not touch me because the managers there think your after their jobs and they won't risk the chance of being shown up by someone new and face the sack or whatever.

I send off around 10-15 CVs a week for jobs i am qualified for or over qualified for and there is just a huge unemployment figure in the UK right now that most jobs you go for 100s of others are going for the exact same one and its literally luck if you even get offered an interview because of the sheer amount of people going for it.

I challenge anyone here to quit their job now and find another i'll bet money your still looking for work come 2 months time.

I am lucky in the fact i got a huge pay off that will last me for the next 8 years and am currently budgeting myself on that each month otherwise i would be living off my dole money+army pension i get each month.

It is not easy to find a job sure if you want to work in a factory on bare minimum wage it might be easy but for those of us who are actually qualified its a different story.

I have friends who went to UNI and got degrees in accountancy or whatever and they were on the dole for about 1 year before they eventually were offered jobs with companys.

Thats mainly because most the folks that go to uni do so for the social life, and rarely for the education. A lot go due to the education, choose the course that best suits, then spend most the time not caring about it - the pub's closer. Then there's the "Media Studies" bunch who of course don't have a clue about life in general - they're there because there's pubs. And then even those who've spent 5-7 years doing various courses and coming out with high end degrees are ending up on the dole.

I was extremely lucky to land my perfect job after 2 months of the dole, and I had just given in to agency work. Very shit agency work.

No matter how difficult finding a job is - striking is hardly going to support your cause (yeah I know they can't do anything about it) - but I pity the poor souls who are dragged along in something they don't have a problem with.

The first agency i took notice of were advertising a great looking job.. i got down there filled out the forms and was told there was no jobs atm going.

I said so what about this job in the paper then? the silly bitch said 'oh sorry thats just to attract attention there isn't actually a job there atm'.

So i said 'In future don't waste my mother fucking time' and calmly walked out.

I was asked to name 3 things people could do instead of striking:

1. Petitions
2. Actually sitting down with a nice cup of tea and talk things over with the problem causing people.
3. Firebomb the people causing problems.

.
Actually I was curious to know of 3 things they could do that would NOT interrupt the postal service, I think all three of those would. Our postman already does the second one sort of, he discusses things over a cup of tea at the guest house across the road part of the way through his route. :)

Even with conservative estimates you've got at least 100 grand if you've got enough cash to last you 8 years. Why don't you invest it? Buy a house and become a landlord or something?

Whilst I sympathise about how hard it is to find work and how shit temping is having been in both situations myself last year, if I had £100k+ sat in my bank I'd be making it work for me rather than wait for rejection letter after rejection letter to land on the doorstep.
