Doesn't matter. He tried to (and did) stop the ball with his hands. Penalty every time and some referees might even send him off...it was a shot on goal.

I thought the rule was 'Arms to the side with hands below elbow' isn't it?
TBH I don't know. If it is it would explain why he called it so quick. But its hard to defend your face with your hands that low.

I know it's instinctive, but it does not matter as I understand it. I was sure someone like pierluigi collina and some other refs said what I did in my earlier post. The protect your face issue does not create an exception, I think they just take it into consideration when it comes to issuing a card. Hope someone like Wazz can shed some light?

The only thing in the rules about handball is that it has to be intentional. That's pretty much it. It's a huge grey area how you decide handball tbh. It should be cleared up in the rules.

Throwing yourself at the ball with your hands over you face is pretty intentional.

He jumped in front of the ball and covered his face. An intentional handball is when you move your hand to the ball and use to to move the ball to your advantage. There is a world of difference between that and what Suarez did for example where he stopped a goal Intentionally.

Matt Dawson on Twitter: "Gerrard's 600th appearance today without a league title should be an example to other players, hardly any loyalty these days!"

The example being: don't come and play for Liverpool.

All this delusion.. He had his arms up and blocked the cross, with his arms in an unnatural position

THIS is covering your face

You honestly can't see the difference between moving you hands to protect your face and and Deliberately moving your hand to block the ball? This is a moot point anyway but if you think they are the same you are delusional.

The fact that he jumped into the path of the ball with his hands over his face makes it totally intentional. I can understand if he was rooted to the spot but if you are going to leap in front of a ball then you should man up and take the ball in the face.

Liverpool flattering to deceive again.

Had most of the posession, looked comfortable all half without getting the necessary numbers into the box, concede on Newcastle's second threatening piece of play all half.

You seem to only have one player comfortable actually being in the box.

Wasn't he turning his head and had his arms up?

Come in Newcastle, fancy them to get a goal on the break now. Brendan is running out of excuses!

79% possession to Liverpool in the second half, Ba goes off and it's like we've had a man sent off.

You don't think that is an unnatural position of hands? He JUMPS straight up at the ball, hands above his waist and takes the ball with his arm.. You really don't think it a penalty?

Tbh he's hardly covering his face in that shot, his face is turned away from the ball as well.

No I said it was a harsh penalty, and I maintain there is a big difference between that handball and one where a player saves the ball on the goal line by moving his hand to the ball. You don't seem to think there is a difference.

The difference is that Carzola didn't directly prevent a goal, much like Suarez did, so I see the difference. You on the other hand seems to think that it could have gone either way? Had that been the other way around and a United player had done the same you'd have been in the other boat I am 100% positively sure

The difference is ball to hand and hand to ball and the word deliberate. He had no intention of handling the ball the ball his his arm. As his arm was in an unnatural position you can see why the ref gave it. But no one would of given a fuck if he had let the game carry on. Like they have done before. This is not a 100% stone wall penalty 100% of the time. And if as said the only thing in the rules is that is has to be intentional then this does not meed the criteria. Unless intention to protect his face counts.

Fucking Shelvey hahaha

He's got the talent, I just don't think he's got the application or effort.

It's like he's going "I'm here, now get the ball to me". Like he's a big name already...

Definitely something missing.
