On paper they're no Ivory Coast imo.

Newcastle must be pretty frustrated at losing Ba and Tiote for a month.

Problem is that the Ivory Coast are the infamous bottlers. Senegal got out of the hardest group with ease and have a totally in-form team.

Doubt it, even with all the plastics Chelsea fans are a bit of a minority.

True alot more establish plastics for the likes of Arsenal/United/Pool. Though Chelsea is a popular one in Cheltenham.. as is Newcastle surprisingly.

I'm curious guys, elaborate for me exactly what a 'plastic' supporter is?

Generally people who support a team because they saw them on TV once and thought they looked good. They have absolutely no link to the team or town that the team is from. If you were going to be brutally honest most fans are plastics as they "picked" a team from the prem to follow, though that is at the end of the day what modern football is.

I have often thought that I should get behind a premiership team to support as well as my home town team (Northampton) but I just don't have any emotional attachment to any of them! The nearest is probably Spurs, only because the wife is a Spurs fan and I like to see them do well, I don't exactly lose any sleep when they lose though!

Edit: Personally I don't have a problem with plastics as such. But they should support their team through thick and thin, there are plenty of fans that are only fans when their team are doing well.

For me its someone that comes as a business perk and could not name a starting 11 if there lives depended on it. They also take no interest in the results unless they are there. Hence why they follow the top teams of any given period.

A plastic doesn't give a fuck about their team when they are losing. They give plenty of fucks when they're winning.

Plastics to me are those giving it large when there team are winning but are nowhere to be seen when the times are tough (not that they'd have chosen there team if they ever would be). Those that have zero affiliation to their team and never bother to visit the ground. To me, aslong as you go 3-4 times a season then that is enough effort to me for the person to be considered a supporter.

Cheltenham as I've said many a time is annoying for this, noone follows the Town, even now when they are sitting 2nd in League Two they rarely draw more then 3,000 in a catchment area that is a whole county (only league team in Gloucestershire). Yet you can't move in any pub when one of the big guns are playing, hence why last year I was over the moon that we managed to do a few of them over. Beating United with 200 odd United fans and just me + a few uni mates was immense.. them celebrations for the 2nd goal were something epic :D.

Plastics to me also wouldn't follow there team no matter what, we could drop out of existance and re-form in the Midlands Football Alliance and I'd still follow and only have an affilation for Wolves. Plastics just don't have that same motivation.

Seems everyone has just about the same impression on what a plastic is then.

The one thing I'm inclined to disagree with though, is what Everz says about visiting the grounds. I've never been to a match in my life despite having been a Newcastle fan for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I/my parents simply couldn't afford to take me, I stopped following for a few years around my teens but have recently gotten back into it. My excuse now though is that none of my mates (or at least ones I'd want to spend a considerable amount of time with) could give much of a toss about football, and the ones that do are dang blasted Sunderland supporters! I'll get to a match one day though, would absolutely love to go.

I don't really mind the plastics that support their team but don't know anything about them tbh.

It's the ones that patronise and wind up other fans that piss me off. You know the fuckers in the pub that cheer wildly when united score like they are trying to prove something. You can't really get back at them either because their teams typically always fucking win.

Maybe I am a plastic, if I am it doesn't really bother me a lot. When I was a kid there was two teams growing up that you supported (where I came from at least) Liverpool or United. I didn't pick United because they were winning, I picked them because my best mate did. Maybe that's what he picked United but it's not why I did. In Galway where I come from is one of the worst League of Ireland teams in the country, Galway United. I still support them and went to games when I was there but honestly for the level of quality I might aswell watch a bunch of kids playing down the park. So I wanted to watch a higher standard of football so I follow the premiership.

I've only been to one United game at Old Trafford. I'd love to go to more but I could barely afford that when I lived in Ireland, I don't stand a chance living 3000 miles away.

I do try to make an effort to get in here when United lose, because honestly you lot on here are the closest I get to people caring about football stateside, and I give it sometimes so should probably take it as well.

anyways that's my little ramble off topic. Plastic and Proud!

Also by Soze's standards there's about 2 people who use this thread that are actually plastic!

Going by Wazz's description as well, it would be difficult for Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal etc to have plastics, since they pretty much always do well ;)

I mean surely if you go to a forum online to have a chat about your teams and others then it shows you care a fair amount yeah?

Don't get me wrong I know I probably don't have the same amount of passion as someone from Manchester, but does that mean I should just stop supporting them after about 13 years of doing so (admittedly probably 5 years of doing so really properly)

I do not believe for a second that you need to visit a ground to be a real fan. You can be just as passionate and die hard and have the exact same ups and downs with out every visiting the stadium. Follow all the team news and follow the games to the best of your ability then that's good enough IMO.

In Sweden 90% of the people (age 15-25, older more spread with a lot of spurs/liverpool/newcastle/arsenal) following PL are united fans, I am guessing the age group that now are 5-15 will be a bit skewed towards City. Chelsea aren't really that popular afaik over here.

Only seen one City fan IRL and he started cheering for City when they were bought by Shinawatra :p

If you are passionate about your team you'll go to some matches. If you're not a fanatic you're not a fan. Definite plastic ness about your post I'm afraid.

"The 26-year-old added that if the international friendly between France and Uruguay, which is scheduled for the end of 2012, were to take place now, Evra "would have to wear armour"." :D
