Yeah but playing him with Terry is dumb since they're so similar, not that Capello can see that. I'd have Cahill behind Ferdinand and Dawson behind Terry. Lescott wouldn't be anywhere near the squad.

We'd be ruined if Cole ever quit international duty. Best player we've had for ages now. No other English left back comes close (this is your chance Arsenal boys...)

Isn't Baines decent?

Baines has had a cracking PL season, can do a job and take a good set-piece. Not going to set the world on fire at international level.

Although IMO it's pointless having a great DL and no DR.

Where are these mythical England players who turn up?
Well, exactly, that's pretty much the point, there aren't many. Maybe Ashley Cole, Gerrard, Lampard (Though I still don't think there is room for both) and that's pretty much it. Very few of them bother...the world cup /facepalm was a perfect example or players who really are capable of playing at a world class level playing as if they are down the park with their kids.
There is virtually no competition for international places, they know if they don't perform they will still get picked because of their name. No England manager in the last 10 years has had the balls to drop England regulars.

Think it's more a fear of failure Raven; damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If they take a risk, try a new formation, change players, they get lambasted when they lose. If they stick with the same old, and the players don't turn up, they get lambasted for not changing things. A combination of an utter travesty of sports media and the general stupidity of fans.

Pretty much this I think.

There is so much pressure on the England team that they are crippled by it. Let them play, stop acting like every world cup is the last one. Lose a game and move on and don't hang fucking effegees of your players if they have a bad game and you will get there eventually.

INTERVIEW: Oliver Holt On Eating His Words, Nani Criticism, Fergie Press Conferences and Modric

Good read and this bit gave me a laugh...

I think it was 2003 – I went to Lisbon for the last group game against Benfica. Fergie had a press conference the day before the game at a big conference centre and so because I was about 20 rows back and there were lots of other journalists there and there was a door that provided an escape route about ten yards away, I got brave and asked him an impertinent question. I got the microphone and asked him if his own position would be under threat if United didn’t qualify for the knock out stages of the competition. He looked at me with total scorn and said: “I’m not answering that question.” So I asked him why not and he just waved the question away. Then he turned to Carlos Queiroz, who was sitting next to him on the dais, and said: “We’ve got some right fucking pricks in here today.” We didn’t hear it at the time but some of the TV monitors picked it up and the TV boys told us about it. Very funny.

I think most play rubbish because they're rammed into a formation/position that doesn't suit them at all. The way England lined up at the world cup was a joke.

England are just a joke, the FA are a joke, the manager is a joke, and our fans are a joke. We really do just inspire other fans to redicule our national team. lol.

The English FA makes rediculous decisions with no thoughts of the outcome (lets remove a clause from the contract that will help inspire the manager to do well at teh world cup), lets pick foriegn managers that clearly aint up to the job, lets pay rediculous wages to a manager as a basic wage (should performance base it0.

Managers - pick players on name and reputation, not ability or form (drives me mad so much, on FM I even willing to take Championship players to major tournaments :p )

Fans - expect too much from the team, we done nothing for a long time so stop with all this "we will win it this year and if we dont we will slag the team and pick a random scape goat"

That interviewer comes across as the most undiplomatic, bias moron ever to conduct a football interview.

Of course he did, he a man utd fan, not a reporter :p

And yet if you read some his articles you can see he has been scathing about United for the best part of a decade, just goes to show that alot of these journos are just writing for shock effect and not always what they really believe.

Oh and if you meant Scott, well it is a fanblog and not proper journalism. :p

I said it before and i'll say it again. We need to use Germany as a model of how to build a successful team. We do have a huge amount of youth talent currently that can nurtured in time for the next WC.

Yep time to give youth a chance, the old guard have already failed miserably on at least 4 occasions at major tournaments.

Indeed, next for the step up from the u21s should be Smalling and Martin Kelly.

It's actually quite scary the amount of 'potential' England has currently got on offer, even a team of our youth could compete quite well imo.

Maybe that youth development centre that was planned a decade ago should actually be built? An English Clairefontaine.

Media are a massive part of he problem too, nothing can be done about that though.

Smalling was pretty rubbish vs Denmark U21s, playing with Vidic flatters him, understandably.

Brooking should have been put in unilateral control of the FA long ago, we wouldn't be in this mess if anyone had the balls to force his vision through rather than stick with the same old.

Very true Everz, on paper I think we usually have a better squad u21 than we do for the "A" team.

The FA board is a joke as well, how can someone like David Gill sit on it and expect to be impartial when making decisions?

Its old boys club. As inept as FIFA but without the obvious corruption.

They are too stupid to be corrupt. Corruption takes organisation.

As for FA board members; yes Aoln, they should not have active links to clubs.

More importantly, Pakistan are fucked :)

Smalling is definately close, he is already better than Lescott and closing in on Dawson at a rapid rate. Kelly is a good call too, some potential there. Would love to see more of Rodwell, everything I read suggest he has what it takes.

Definately some promising youth but we really need to make the best of this upcoming generation and not squander it away like the current and last generations.

I'd say the defensive order is Dawson/Cahill-Terry-Jagielka/Smalling/Ferdinand/Lescott imo.

My Everton supporting mate doesn't reckon Rodwell is all that tbh.
