Just proof the majority of the public are dumb tbh (see Xfactor, I'm a celebrity), I don't see why this shouldn't just be decided by a panel of actual experts rather than the raving masses

Actually this is exactly why this years vote was even more accurate, all the stupid people were watching x-factor :)

I rest mine

Premier League title, League Cup title, World Club Champions, Footballer of the Year. All in the last season.

Do you want to continue making a dick of yourself?

Giggs deserves this at the end of his football days imo

But public votings are a funny thing.. In the NFL players are voted into the Pro Bowl by the viewers and last year all of the Redskins fans decided to vote in one of their players eventho he was shit

Bitter?

11 Premier League titles including current champions
4 FA cups
3 League Cups
2 Champions Leagues
1 World Club Champions

20 years at the top of the game, most decorated player in British football history, nice guy and great role model for kids.

I rest my case.

While i admit he is a legend a freaky hairy legend his history does not matter. I also do not see what he has done in the last 12 months that puts him above someone like Button.

As I'm no man u fan though so i may underestimate his contribution to you title win last season.

Ok, so lets get into it. Button had a great 3 months, after that he crawled to the title in a car that had some major technical advantages over his competitors. Button did fuck all in his previous years, he is a great driver but Ryan Giggs is performing miracles for a man his age.

Remember, Giggs is a current World Champion, a current League Champion and the current reigning player of the year.

Like i said i just must not have seen enough of what he did last year.

Giggs just does not work in my head because football is a team game but then so is f1 which like you say is even more dependent on an team so i dont know maybe im still just bitter from that fa cup game ;)

Yep I think it is your bias after that goal bud. :p Giggs was a big part of our success in the last 12 months to be honest, he turned in a good 10-12 match winning performances during that period and did things a 24 year old would be proud of. Hell, even Ronaldo has said he is performing at an incredible level for his age but he is also still one of the best left sided players in Europe and has been for nearly 20 years.

i agree, had the "what has he won this year" arguement on another forum and had to point out that last seasons victories come into this year for the sake of the yearly rewards because the succes came in said year due to way a season runs. They then started to say "welsh people fixed it cry cry cry."

So left them to it

Everyone is using Button as the alternative to Giggs. What about Ennis? World Champion and World No. 1 at one of the toughest events in sport this year. Andrew Strauss? The only english batsmen to give anything to the Ashes winning team, and also the captain. Andy Murray? The first british tennis player to acheive anything since Fred Perry.

Plenty of better options than Giggs.

We don't agree often but I felt Ennis was more deserving than Button, of course I wanted Giggs to win it but I felt that if anyone else was going to win it should be her.

As for Strauss and Murray, Strauss beat a very poor Australia and even legends like Gooch/Botham have stated such. Murray is a fucking great player but he isn't the finished article yet and until he wins a Grand Slam title you just cannot put him in the same category as world champions. David Haye? Beat a giant but has fought no one considered to be a true great yet. The young diving kid is a phenom and I hope he goes on to dominate for the next decade, he would have been my 3rd place.

I agree Haye wasn't an option, i'd have fancied myself against Valuev and im about 11 stone.

I'd also say that people keep saying the aussie side we beat this summer was poor, but the stats state completely the opposite.

Public votes are indeed a very poor judge. Do you remember those lists of '100 best' that abounded at the end of the millenium (well, actually, one year before the millenium turned as they were done in 1999)?

Every 'best of' list for actors, writers, books, films, music was completely dominated by artistes of the previous 10-20 years. As if people living before 1980 lived in mud huts.

I'm happy for Giggs but football is a team game, my personal opinion is that Button would have been a more worthy winner. But no sour grapes, just a realisation that the public are, mostly, easily swayed.

In Sweden we have similar awards but a jury who votes. It is nearly impossible for football or hockey players to win anything. We've have had one of the best hockey players in the world (Peter Forsberg/Nicklas Lidström) and now one of the best Football players (Zlatan). But they can't win an award if their life dependent on it. The hockey team managed to win World Cup and Olympics in the same year, first time ever that happened. The medal went to a paralympics shooter guy. But in general, if you don't have skis. Don't bother :p

i.e. public jury > "professional" jury

Get in a car, drive around in circles and consider it a sport

"BUT OMG YOU HAVE TO BE SUPER FIT TO DRIVE F1 CARS CORKNOZE!" Probably, but you have to be super fit to be an astronaut aswell.. Should they be nominated then?

I agree to some extent, a sport which is mainly dependent on what car you drive isn't that interesting :(

had this debate with some friends last night and they were saying that he deserves a life time achivement award and maybe eventually a knigthood ectect

but not sports personality of the YEAR

i disagreed cos giggs is still a fucking legend and taht hard for me to say after some of the goals he has deverstated liverpool with, not least the 2 against jerzy dickhead a few years ago

at the end of the day you ahve to take into account this is a 36 year old playing in a game dominated but 20-30's anyone above 31-32 is considered an old player, not only is he still playing, but he's playing at the top level, in the hardest league (arguably FO marc) for one of the best teams in europe and still putting in motm performances

whatever team you support you gotta admire that

Whats MM doing dropping the whole first XI from Spurs oO.

Probably looking at the games you have over Christmas and saving his best players for games he considers to be winnable?

Good performance by Villa thus far tonight and superb goal by Milner. He's loving that central midfield position.

Doing himself no harm in Capello's thoughts with his current form, as one of the initial outsiders for the WC squad he looks to be cementing his place week on week.

Milner is a good player, but there is no way he should play ahead of Joe Cole, providing the latter is fit.
