Yes it is low and he should have been sent off, but the way people are reacting and saying he deserves a long ban is way off the mark. You get players making potentially leg break tackles who get a red card and thats it.

Poking in the eye always has a risk of blinding a person though. So i would rate that right up, maybe beyond a leg break.

In general a broken leg could end a career, but it wont leave you disabled for life unless it some real unusual break which takes the leg being amputated. Yes in later life it could cause problems though.

A poke in the eye can lead to instant and perminant blindness. This means that the person that blinded in one eye is generally fucked for the rest of their life as it will affect everything they do. Admittingly a poke in the eye by accident could do the same, but the way accidental pokes happen are complete different to a dilibrate and straight into the eye motion.

As such, the manner in which it was done there should be an instant 3 match ban for his antics putting it on par with a vicious leg break challenge. But of course, since when has the FA or the Referee's done anything that makes sense.
The referee in all fairness should simply go "If I saw the poke in the eye it would have been straight red, unfortunately I booked him due to believing he just poked his cheak/face. As such I suggest we upgrade it to a red card for violent behaviour and ban him for 3 games"
