Strange and irritating problem

Hi,

I've been trying to use PowerPoint today, and have had a problem. I can't put an image into it. I tried all the ways to do it, but no joy. I am running XP and Office Pro.

I tried fixing Office, then I tried reinstalling Office, then I tried a system restore. No luck on any of them.

Then for a laugh I tried setting up another user on my PC. On this user PowerPoint works fine. :(

I guess this suggests that it is some sort of setting, or corruption, that is effecting just the main PC user, and not a specific program or system fault, but I haven't even got the first idea of where to start looking for such a thing.

Help please

Thanks

RB

I'm shit with PP, but is there another image already there that is set to "display front" or whatever the setting is? This would obscure the image that you are pasting by sending it to the back. If you are trying to paste into an existing PP then maybe try into a new one?
I hate PP.

Thanks Yuk,

Just realised that I did a pretty crap description of the problem.

When I click on teh 'openimage from file' icon it opens my Pictures, so far so good, but then it goes very slow and always justs hangs soon after, sometimes before, sometimes after I have selected a picture file.

The computer continues to work but PP refuses to do anything, not even an error message. If I open Task Manager it shows PP as non responsive and then opens a window to let me close it.

The wierdest thing is that if I create another user for the PC then it works fine under that user, it is just me it hates.

Try using office update, or just uninstall and reinstall the software.

Don't know how to fix your problem, but cut 'n paste might be an alternative workaround?

Try deleting all the thumbs.db files.

Hi Yuck,

Thanks again, I actually tried cutting an image from an existing PP show and pasting it straight back ito the same page. It still hung :eek7:

Tom,

I have a sneaky suspicion that you may be a genius.

That realy started ringing bells as my PC has been a bit off with showing thumbnails for a few weeks. I am at work ATM so I can't try it, but I will tomorrow.

What is the best way to do this BTW? A file search for thumbs.db and delete all that it finds? I guess windows will then recreate them all.

Thanks again

Isn't there an option somewhere to turn all that stuff off?

I have had problems since SP2, nothing major like this, just little crap.

What patch did you have? Is it worth me having a go?

it was a word patch from MS...I think there is an orifice patch, but iirc, it required the install disks & as I was too lazy to get off my arse and walk down the road to the IT department where I borrowed the disks from originally...my solution was to not bother going in and to work from my SP2-free machine at home ;) (well ... Ive been working at home for 6 weeks now :drink: )

I even tried uninstalling sp2....90 mins later and after several reboots and a total failure to connect to our novel network...I couldn't even uninstall sp2...so I rolled forward and just gave up.

Fuck, Fuck, Fuck.

I was so sure that Tom's idea would work :(

In fact it almost did, the first image I tried to put in went fine, but then it all fell apart again and it just hangs every time.

I am getting so pissed off with this.

Oh, and I just tried to import an image into Word as well, with exactly the same result, program freezes, no error message, but shown as Not Responding in Task Manager. :(
