Recent Eurogamer Preview - Star Trek Online Preview - Page 1 // MMO /// Eurogamer - Games Reviews, News and More

...The studio seems full of ideas for the story, perhaps unsurprisingly given the richness of their source material. It's set in 2309, 30 years after Nemesis and 22 years after the supernova that destroyed the Romulan homeworld. It wouldn't be Star Trek without time travel, mirror universes and the Borg, all of which make preposterously unlikely meetings with long-dead characters from the series a possibility.

There are already plenty of ideas in place for post-release updates, too - including ground vehicles and the ability to go inside your own ship and use it as a lobby space - but Cryptic wants to make sure you can customise every aspect of your bridge and officer's quarters, rather than just giving players a generic space to call their own. You don't lose access to old ships as you gain new ones, in case you ever fancy taking your starter-class ship out for a spin for old time's sake. Plans for the high-level game are also looking promising; it will offer raid-style Borg battles, and exclusive areas for endgame players

We're getting a beta "really soon", apparently - "I can't tell you exactly or I'll get yelled at," grins Zinkievich - and the PC release in 2010 will be followed by a console release sometime in the future (although we don't know exactly which consoles yet). Star Trek Online is clearly shooting for a broad audience, and though its permissiveness and flexibility might mean it lacks depth for players who like keen specialisation, it's an approach that makes sense when you're trying to fulfil the childhood dreams of a huge number of people.

Is it going to be a spaceship battling type thing or like Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to lightpeed?

both ground and space fights.

The space ones look like they be tactical. 4shields you can transfer power between, can transfer power to engines or weapons as well etc. You find ships weak spots and try to exploit them whilst tacticaly standing your ship with its strongest area exposed etc :)

sounds like lots of potential

unless its a bait, wich i'm pretty sure will be a wildly used tactic come release.

can be pretty damn sure atleast the klingons will use it as they all have fucking stealth.

well if thats the case then the movies arent accurate either as if i'm not totally wrong, in atleast one movie both klingons and romulans had some impressive stealth fleets of pretty much every class. even the romulans warbird had stealth there.

but then again it was quite a few years since i actually watched any of those movies...

maybe im wrong. It been a long time since i watched them. That said large cloak = easier to detect surely because it putting out more of whatever particle allows you to detect them.

ack who cares. Role on the release :)

The Jem Hadar in Deep Space 9 could detect Cloaked ships, as could the Breen. I certainly think given the timeline and given the other advances, Cloaked ships will be around but its going to be something similar to Cloakers in Planetside and having that detect stealth ability (Darkvision?)

Should be interesting anyway

I'm skeptical about how the game will play out in all honesty. Cryptic's PvE in City of Heroes was good but repetitive, and their PvP was pretty useless.

How will players be rewarded for epic raids? Upgrades for ships presumably? What will happen if you lose in PvP ... is your ship lost and all of your upgrades?

I have signed up for the beta and will probably play it, but I am not hopeful of a good game. Plus the concept of upgrading your ships and still having access to the previous ones seems hokey at best.

as far as i've understood it you wont lose your ship when it explodes, it basically end up in a repair dock or something.

quote from: 2404 - PC Gaming - Star Trek Online Interview

9. How will player deaths be handled in the game?

We’re not ready to provide exact details, but the defeat penalty won’t be harsh. I think we’re past the days of outrageous death penalties in MMOs. People want to play and have fun.

so its probably safe to say that there wont be any deaths ala EvE-o...

wich i'm sure will bum off the griefers to new hights of whining..

everyone that took up the offer is in by the end of DECEMBER.

This means if you in on the 31st then you probably get about 12hrs of testing at most due to the 2 times a week for a small amount of hrs, with Open Beta starting mid January.
I expected them to do this mind you with people not getting in till the last minute, just think it hilarious that my 6month account got access before my lifetime account, considering the differnce in money spent (and faith shown) in Cryptic.

I knew though when they reopened the offer without removing the beta invite this was gonna be happening, and said i wouldnt be surprised if people got in on the last week/day of Closed Beta as they could still state "we stuck by the offer as never said when you would get in)

As for the beta test. The game shows potential but I honestly not sure how they can have it ready in time for Feb 2nd... especially when you look at the fact that there has been NO closed beta testing of the Klingons, you only got access to the federation currently.
COntrols are a bit... clunky, but i was on the laptop which didnt help matters. But it certainly should be entertaining if nothing else... I just hope they give me a deal on subscription as i got a lifetime account on CO :p

Imo this game is gonna fail, what is there to do in that game then push your shields around at random and more fire and less engines.. and fire all your torpedoes all the time and bording partys. Ah well I guess the game experience could be fun but seriously look at this vid. How to Fly Starships in Star Trek Online - giantbomb
