G is actually a superhero called DareDevil. he can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, but he can do lots of other things.

Nah, it isn't that, I'm just pure evil with a skin container.

One thing that hasnt been made clear is where the line is going to be drawn or this may be the intention. If everyone knows where they stand then there can be no arguement. I'd imagine a lot of the people on this forum do not know or understand the legal implications. I'd suggest a brief checklist of what is acceptable and what is not.
ie.
1. Comments which can be perceived as racially offensive should be avoided, even if the intended target is unlikely to take offense.
2. Picture content should be roughly inline with what you would expect to see on TV (ITC Guidelines).
etc etc.

Judgement should be meated out consistently and fairly.

I'd meat your judgement :)

tbh I found the T&C clear enough, or as clear as my flu-riddled brain can make it.
It was the first time I'd read it though, and I expect most peeps will think 'yeah, yeah' and click <next>. good enough though as, imo the T&C (any T&C for that matter) is a foundation for agreements, the bottom line if you will. people's general behaviour should be thus that they never overstep the boundries of respect and polite behaviour in the first place.

goodness, look at me. I've only just gotten up</excuse>

I don't think it's what you do or say as such, it's the context.
It's common sense, therefore we shouldn't need rules.

yeah well, we've seen the level of common sense round here of late, which is exactly why Ted and co have had to step in.

Just to add to everything else here that was on topic, and I think you all realise this now, discussions about locked/deleted threads are frowned upon in most forums. So, any issues with a mods decision shouldn't be aired in public, but done via private message. This has happened with the bannings, and so it should with everything else.

Otherwise this will turn into the world's grumpiest forum ever.;)

u reckon we get in trouble for 'making' that new guy delete his champ man thread?

Well I suppose Barrysworld have got rid of all the players on the servers, so the forum community is the next logical step.

And discussions about locked/deleted threads only occurs when the subject was worth discussing in the first place. Can only expect having "Dad" step and tell you what you can and can't talk about to be met with some hostility.

So go speak to "Dad" about it. But make sure you do it nicely, or he'll kill me for suggesting it.

Lets try this again shall we?

I've had a good chat with Dimebag and Perplex and we've come to an understanding and I'm happy to unban them both and have done so.

.cage is a different matter and I'm not sure this forum is the best place for him and his politics. I wrote to him offering to chat to him and see if we could come to an understanding too, but havent received a reply, and in retrospect I'm not sure I should even have done that, so he's staying banned for good.

The last couple of days has also seen a personal attack on a community member. Now, we're a community and therefore arguments and teasing and taunting are part of the deal as far as I'm concerned, but a concerted attack on someone at the level just witnessed is way beyond acceptable is almost certainly an infringment of his personal rights and therefore subject to civil law if the victim should see fit to persue the matter.

We have no intention of allowing BarrysWorld or GAME.NET being used as a platform for personal vendettas and grudges. Take it elsewhere, somewhere where we cant be sued as the publisher!
In fact, sort it out properly amongst yourselves as adults.

This ISNT A GAME! UK civil law is there to protect the individual and complaining to me that I'm not being fair by protecting myself and my employer from law suits and individuals from attack simply wont work.

I believe we've been very fair in the enforcement of our Terms & Conditions over the years and I urge you to take a little time to read them.
Its not hard and we've gone to some lengths to avoid "legalese".

Things like this have some relevence to the lst few days for instance:
[Dont] Harass, threaten, embarrass, or do anything else to another Member or guest that is unwanted. This means: don't say bad things about them, don't keep sending them unwanted messages, don't attack their race, sexual orientation, religion, culture, etc. If you disagree with someone, respond to the subject, not the person

I have no wish to rain on your parade. Maintaining a community forum means involving the community and giving it room to breathe and grow but everything has limits.

I'll be setting up a "New Gamers" forum alongside General later, with a view to having somewhere for newbies to go. Sort of a boot camp for the General forum, and we'll not tolerate newbie bashing in there, even in jest. However, part of the reason in setting it up is recognition that regulars also need protecting and are not a sub-class on the forums.

Medium to long term I'd like to get General moderated by the community and therefore perhaps you should raise that question again amongst yourselves as to who should do it? I reckon 3 or 4 Mods should be about right and then I can remove staff from being the moderators.

fair play ted... the whole thing gotta out of hand and needed to be diffused... not just from a legal stand point, it was getting ridiculous the way Xav was being forced into a corner... we've been given the facts and now it's between those 3 to sort things out.

How feasible is it to set up a hardcore-general forum, one that says "this forum is unmoderated: you must accept that blahblahblah" etc?

I know it's been suggested before, but I don't recall Ted answering.

Because there'll be nothing to stop it turning into an Anti-Jew forum. Or a BNP niche. Or Hardcore pr0n pics forum.

It's been said before. Public forum = imposed rules. Like it or lump it.

An unmoderated forum would have to come under the same T&C's as a moderated forum. So no point having a hardcore one really.

Without fresh blood, a regulars forum would get quieter and quieter, and then die. I can't see any point in having one. Surely we can just enjoy the general forum as we always have done, behave like adults, and get on with it.

But if there was a disclaimer.. doesn't that cover BW/Game?

there is a disclaimer, but that still doesn't stop libel suits being brought or the tabloids would be doing it all the time

*sigh*

Oh well, I'll just have to save up my hatred and abuse for the evening so I can unloaded on IRC.

It's a bloody good thing game.net don't own #quake2.uk :D
