Smoking - I quit

My reasoning for not quitting smoking is simply that i enjoy it. Hard to explain really, but thats the way it is. I quit each time i've been pregnant, midwife got me to blow smoke on a piece of cotton wool, look at the goo on it, and imagine that going into baby's system.. huzzah no smoking for baby.
I understand that smoking shortens your life, causes cancer etc, however my mother smoked for 30 years and was a heavy drinker, she died aged 47 after falling down stairs in middle of the night, if she hadn't smoked or drank all her life she'd still have died, so for now i'm happy to carry on like a chimney. Well done to the guys that are quitting though, i know how hard it is so keep it up etc :)

There is no need for porn or self pleasuring when the beautiful town of Barnsley is within an hour's drive.

Actually there was some article somewhere recently that wacking off at least 6 times a week or something reduces your risk of prostate cancer....... 6 times a week... I must be the freakin' anti-cancer :D

I keep thinking the patches are too expensive, buit then I compare it to the amount I'd spend on fags over a week and it seems ok again.

I think I mentioned it before, and it may depend on your local health authority or something, but my mate went to the docs and got the patches on prescription.

This had changed from when I went to see them the year before, when your had to go and do some group thing, all giving up together etc/addiction counselling as a condition of getting them given to you.

At the time I was like you ... it wasn't actually costing me any more than I was likely to spend on fags anyway, so I just said no thanks, and went and bought them.

Depends I guess if you can get it together to make an appointment at the docs and see what they say.

Anyway, once again, good luck :)

But surely that's what an addiction is all about. It short circuits the brain and makes you do things that aren't necessarily very good for you. Though not staying in your body for long after you've stopped, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances. Hand in hand with that (by the point you're at when you're thinking of giving up) is all the mental stuff about how you relate to your social experiences without your little white friend-assassins - you feel stressed all of a sudden because you've got nothing to do with you hands, all that stuff, etc.,

Smokers tend to know all the reasons why smoking is bad for them and why they should stop. It's hard to avoid it in today's world. When you're addicted though, unless you are deliberately fighting it, then well you're addicted.

I never smoked when I was at school - I thought it was stupid, etc. I had tried the odd one, but it tasted foul and gave me a headache. Other than the supposed 'cool/rebel' factor, which I was bothered with, I couldn't see what people saw in it. Then when I was at college, 20 or so, I was at a party and there were joints going round and I got into that - now that was a pleasant effect :)

And while you're enjoying the ganja the nicotine is getting into you, and suddenly the nicotine addiction is hassling you during the day when you're at work, and you start smoking plain cigs. Rambling - will stop now and go sweat some more.

Exactly the same way I got into smoking. Unofrunatley when I left the nice smoking scene I couldn't stop smoking normal cigs. It's still going well today though. Cheers to ]SK[ for keeping my mind busy last night.

I've smoked weed for about 18 years and have never felt the urge to smoke a normal cig. I can quite happily go without weed for weeks or longer. Can't see the appeal of normal cigs at all.

I've completely screwed up :(.

Finished with my Missus of 2 years though so I do have an excuse (and yet I know how lame it is to have an excuse, a smoker will use anything as an excuse to start again if he's trying to give up.)

I'll be resurrecting this thread next month when I go again. Hopefully I'll be able to go a week without posting.

Pls keep the faith. I will do this!

Since someone has dug this thread up (;)), my girlfriend quit smoking the Monday after her birthday (one week ago), and apart from two herbal smokes yesterday after spending 9 hours in traffic, is going strong.

And hasn't killed me yet.

I broke last Thursday, but have been clean since and feel very, very good. My cough has gone away and I can now walk up the 2 flights of stairs to my office without needing a paramedic on standby.

Sorry to hear about the troubles Jon. But definatley think about trying again soon.

I've managed 2 weeks and 1 day so far. This week seems to be the hardest, as I'm coughing a lot and have the symptoms of a head cold (of course I could really have a cold:cool: ).

I hope you get back on track again soon Jonny.

Jonny - Bad luck on life throwing you a wobbler ... good luck when you try again - just try to keep on trying :)

Whipped - Well done. It's good when you start to get the physical benefits, though I never followed it up and got exercising on a regular basis!

It's not unusual I think to feel better for while and then go through a period of feeling pretty rough as your body clears the crap out of your system.
