Shivery film moments

Just been having a conversation in the pub which was about moments in films that provoke a reaction. We had to narrow this down, so I'm talking about moments that gave you that surge of adrenaline, or made you jump, or shiver, or shudder or just say 'oh yeah!

I'll give some examples, then you do it.
  • The moment in Se7en where Kevin Spacey walks into the precinct with his bloody hands up saying, "Detective. Detective. DETECTIIIIVE! I think... you're looking... for me." then Pitt rushes forward saying "Down! Get down! All the way down! Faster!" Good moment.
  • The first time we see what the kid sees (ie the first ghost) in 'Sixth Sense'
  • The bit in 'The Untouchables' where Sean Connery says "What the hell. Ya gotta die of something" then all of them charge round on their horses as the music swells.
  • And the original, I suppose, in 'Planet Of The Apes' when Charlton Heston sees the sunken head of the Statue of Liberty.
Believe it or not, I'd be interested in any others you can describe.

I've never liked any of the long corridor shots in The Shining, don't really know why but it's just unsettling.

That bit on ghostbusters where they're in the library and that ghostly librarian gets pissed off :)

Took me years to get over my stigma of that scene and actually watch it all the way through with my eyes open.

Exorcist 3 will forever remain etched in my memory :( the scene with the cracking ice in a glass by the bed.... you just know something is coming... one of the scariest moments in any film ever...

For pure coolness... the bit in Elizabeth where the priest is walking down the corridor to kill Cate Blanchett with his robes flowing behind him ... very cool piece of film

heh the bit in jurassic park(sp?) where they're getting up into the ceiling and the raptor jumps for the persons leg.

I'm also a sucker for romantic films so any sort of schmuck gets me, the best I can remember is the end of amelie where they get together. That was more a yes moment but the kissing was cool as well.

I've only just gotten up so I'm a little sketchy but here goes

  • Aliens: the sound of the motion detector going off (for the first time) really freaks me out.
  • The Mission: The Priest (Jeremy Irons iirc) leading the church congregation out even though he knows the conquistdores are waiting. I cried buckets.
  • Starman: The Scientist deciding that the Alien Anthropologist's freedom is worth more that his capture -and- the expression on Jeff Bridges' face as he and the girl walk down into the radiation from the spacecraft.
  • The Birds: the area is literally chock full of birds but there is no sound. aaarg damn you Hitchcock!
  • Platoon: Francis stabs himself in the leg so he can get sent home as a twice wounded soldier. Lots of blood and gore in that film but that bit always gets me -also- the expression on o'Neil's face when he gets told he is now platoon leader
  • Castaway: the sound of the coconuts dropping on the beach. I've heard that sound a million times in Indonesia growing up, and had not heard it for nearly 20 years till I saw the movie. Placed it instantly and covered myself in goosebumps.

can't think of more need coffee

I'd love that as a polyphonic ringing tone.

bah!

And:

The major action scenes in The Matrix -
  • When the chopper blows up
  • When Neo first experiences bullet time
  • When Neo realises he's The One
  • When Mprpheus gets the shit kicked out of him (Love when he cracks his head off the toilet:))

And basically all of American Beauty, and the Vietnam scene in Forrest Gump is/was a real tear jerker for me ;(

edit:// OOH! And my single favourite one liner evah!!"£ I think it's in House of the dead where the priest knows Kung Fu and says "I kick ass for the lord!" :D

Definatley Jap version of Ring, very chilling.

Leatherface dumping that girl on the meathook in Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Last 20 minutes of Attack of the Clones..if only for decrepid old Yoda leaping about like an ninja. WoOt.

First 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan...totally gobsmacking.

And on a similar note the episode of Band of Brothers where they discover the concentration camp....I sobbed like a baby.

..oh and watching americans munch on live slugs on Fear Factor on sky one. Only time i wanted to spew coz of something on the TV.
