You've pretty much summed it up right there.

Whilst some people like to wander around looking for an unlocked doors while they await the next half-hour-long cut-scene, others (myself included) remember the good old days where actual gameplay was king and you had to use pure skill to finish a game, and as such have a place in our hearts for such lunacy as Serious Sam 2.

Arguing about it is useless as it really does depend on what kind of gamer you are.

Let's not start exaggerating to make a weak point - half hour cut scenes would make anyone switch off.

What we're after is a reason to keep playing. When the whole game is just the same monsters charging at you in the same large rooms then the game gets pretty stale pretty quickly.

That style of gameplay is not king, nor does it involve 'pure skill' (heh) It requires a single-minded determination to enjoy the game and get your money's worth in the face of an endless stream of dull.

There's a word for this type of game. The word is 'moribund'.

I think GTA3 hits a happy medium here - carnage with short cut scenes to map out the storyline

Storylines don't really appeal. If I want one of those I'll play RPGs. Galaga had no storyline. Did quite well without.

Multiplayer FPS games have precisely FUCK ALL story, yet people play those to death.

BTW: Don't get me wrong, my first love is RPGs, and I'll play those to death (I'm currently midway through about 6 different RPGs on various formats), so it's not as if I hate plotted games :)

I don't mind the odd RPG either but I love killing millions of things in an FPS without a hint of a story too :)

Storylines in First Person Shooters (and other games too; Max Payne for example - which I've only now started playing :/) are shabby at best, and pointless at worst.

Your argument is basically I don't like shooting things. Serious Sam (and undoubtedly 2) has a storyline, albeit a shit one. You simply tire of shooting things, which begs the question - why play an FPS?

I thought the first Serious Sam was mediocre, it captured me for a short period, but as with every game on the planet (it seems) it began to wane quickly. Some of the weapons in Serious Sam were pretty lame too (that stupid green plasma weapon thingie - it lacked oomph)

I'm talking about a reason to keep playing. Surprises. Variation. Not through plot, but through gameplay.

Shooting the same monsters in the same large open space but with different textures just doesn't cut it.
