I doubt this. If you could see something like that over Cuba, you could probably see it from Florida; its only 80 miles away.

Well dont look at me! I just read it on a dutch newssite which got it from the above site. No idea how reliable that site is and you have got a point.

Also havent seen it on any other newssite yet.

Looking at the map I can't see a direction such an object would pass over Cuba without being seen by another country with...shall we say...a more open news media. Even if it came down straight at Cuba it would like a pillar of fire from the US, Mexico, the Bahamas and a bunch of other places.

Rumours

It was an attempt by russia to shoot down a us spysat.

It was a US attack on russia.

It was a ufo crash/interception.

Personally I favoured it being debris associated with the big one tonight but they say the direction is wrong.

On the other hand this stuff is worth like a thousand dollars a gram - tempting...

The Russian one came in from the north - I dont have a map handy but wouldnt that bring it in over the atlantic on a theoretical approach to Cuba?

Amazingly coincidental that this happens the same time as a big chunk of rock is supposed to be doing a fly-by.

Not really. Depending on who you ask and the guess work involved, over the whole surface area of Earth between 10,000 to 100,000 meteorites bigger than 10 grams hit the Earth every year. That's a lot of stuff crashing into the atmosphere every day, this one was just larger than average in size.

No airburst of this size recorded for a long time over land.

But odd coincidents do often occur in reality.

I'm no conspiracy theorist and I know next to fuck all about asteroid gravitational behaviours, but them saying it's just a coincidence with the big one tonight just doesn't ring right, I'm sure something will come of it.

Anyone see orbit with that tubby black woman, she was interviewing a Japanese scientist who has found that GPS signals get degraded just before an earthquake because electrons get excited above the tremor site, it would be freakin amazing if it could be used to predict them, especially as an Android app would surely follow.

Why do they keep calling it a near-miss, surely that a hit.
oh look it nearly missed.

Eventually one of the big buggers will hit earth - its a mathematical certainty - we will probably all be long dead by then though.

If I was single I'd be booking a flight to the area to hunt for any fragments - scientifically fascinating and worth a fortune if you can find a decent chunk - time is of the essence too as they slowly get oxidised/weathered now they are in an atmosphere.

Shame the speak in such an ugly language.

The sound of it and all the secondary thumps is awesome and the car alarms all going - its another of those 'would make great film footage' moments - i am deeply envious :)

The one tonight wouldn't be a global catastrophe, it's fairly small and would get smaller as it burns up. It's the big fuckers that measure in miles that we need to worry about. They are out there and they do hit earth from time to time.

I will be in the pub so I don't much care if it hits at that point.
Would depend on what it is made out of, speed of the thing and where it lands (sea/land/location) I think?
Was the 96 kilometer crater in the US not of a similar size, read that somewhere, and if that is the case then the damage area would be larger.
