technically Che Guevara was the "poster boy" ironically
and there is an argument to be made that most of the violence was orchestrated with the help of mandela's wife, while he was in prison, so yea, if your idea of revolution is to spend 30 or so years in prison, knock yourself out.
oh and if you really think apartheid was a good thing then you need to read something that doesnt have pictures in it, you might learn something

RIP although it isn't exactly surprising since he had been almost propped up whenever you saw him over the last 5 years or so, although I've already been utterly bored thanks to the BBC on the whole subject thanks to the wall to wall news coverage.

He's been dead for ages just a corpse on a machine - not sure why they announced it when they did - anyone know?

The trouble people go to, to keep the bullshit going.
He was a terrorist, he was on the US terror list till 2008, Obama took him off it.
He was one of the top 'Generals' of a terrorist organisation that massacered innocent people.

Heres the bombing he says he 'signed off' with in his book Long walk to freedom. NSFW OR YOUR LUNCH

How the living fuck is he a hero?

For perhaps a little insight into Mandela's reasons for resorting to some violence: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/apr/23/nelsonmandela

There is never an excuse for the massacre of civilians, regardless of how you look at it. He was a terrorist. Fullstop.

That's not to say his agenda was not right though and he helped bring about massive change for the good, not just in South Africa. He was still a terrorist scumbag though.

Nobody is saying apartheid was a good thing. Mandela, though terrorism, helped bring about its end. He got caught during his bombing campaigns tho - hence the prison stay.

It begs the question and discussion though: Seeing as terrorism was such an effective tool against social inequality - bringing about massive and righteous change - then maybe it's not as black-and-white an issue as some people (mainly the government and mainstream news outlets) would have you believe.

The fact is Mandela was a murderer. Period.

However - maybe if you didn't put people on ignore for having opinions that are different from yours you might learn something eh, Mabs. Mabs? MAAAAAAAAAABS!

Handy to coverup the further cuts and crackdowns on legitimate employment annouced by George Osbourne? ;)

Diplomacy wasn't working. Shrug.

It isn't on economic reform either. Massive income inequality. But as long as the argument isn't about the colour of people's skin eh?

I had a look at Stormfront, the internet cess pit where racists tend to congregate. All I can say is that if they're glad he's dead, then his death is indeed a very sad occasion.

He did a remarkably good job organising an almost perfectly peaceful transition along with de clerk.

He also produced a fine constitution to be proud of.

It's a shame those who came after him were not as decent.

I understand its diffucult to let go of a good story..but people actually get a cob on when presented with the truth...its the same...no worse...than in 50 years calling the Boston bomber sa hero if he got out of jail and turned America Islam...actually he would be.

Mandela could have gotten out of jail and called for a bloody uprising against the whites - he certainly had good cause but he didn't and very skillfully kept the peace during transition.

He then produced a constitution enshrining equal rights for all south africans irrespective of colour.

He did what many thought impossible.

Yeah, he may have been a terrorist, and he served time for that rightly so, but he did good. Now I don't agree with all the people that think he's the second coming, but he was a great statesman.

I do wish they would present some of the bad along with the good though. A man who happily blew innocent people (black and white) into pieces but later brought everyone together.

Yes balance is good - I think the worst part of his legacy is the tribalism.

The lot of his relatives increased amazingly but the average black south african not so much.

Yes - the problem is everyone knows his story so there's not much scope for any news interest and at his age and ill health everyone has been expecting it.
