Realistic Weekly budget?

Six months ago I had lived on my own (student/postgrad) for 5 years. I moved back home for a secondment into the commerical rather than retail side of the company I work for. This ends in Novemeber and i'm moving back to my old job (away from home).

After my monthly outgoings (loan/phone/insurance) I have £804 left. I'm looking at house shares between £250 (ideally) £400 max.

What is a realistic weekly budget for food these days?

Well you need at least £100-200/week for hookers, at a bare minimum so it looks like you'll be shoplifting/dumpster diving the rest.

Check out where your local soup kitchens/salvation army are.

if you have the money, and buy bulk, etc, rather than hand to mouth you can live quite happily on not alot

I seemed to live on less when I was a student though, that's what I can't understand a few people have said it's not alot to live off now.

But really do I need more than a £100 a week as a single person on my own?

Depends, how much do you go out? What are you saving for?

Try and cut your other outgoings, also you don't seem to have budgeted for household bills in your rent?

Not unless you're a complete fucktard.

I probably spend around £60-£70 a week food shopping for myself, although I spend slightly more as I buy meat from my local butcher, and the supermarkets I frequent are Sainsburys, M&S and Waitrose.

Asda can lick my hairy balls.

A lot of people tend to let their food bill get away from them since it tends to be a weekly bill, they forget it becomes a lot if you times it by whatever to match the timescale of the utility bills.

I do a £100 monthly shop then probably £30 a week for fresh stuff...meat, bread, milk etc. That's for two people though.

Sainsburys then various local places.

I'd say food-wise if you spend more than £50-60 just for yourself then you have rich tastes but it really is properly subjective. I could live on crap such as beans & sausages on toast etc. because to me food is sustenance, and I also forget to eat sometimes. 2 meals a day tops.

My supermarket food shop would be much less if I didn't like my alcohol ;)

Looking more into this rather than renting, has anyone done a property share thing before?

£20k will get me a flat.

Property share? As in buying it with someone else? Or do you mean part buy part let?

How much would your monthly "rent" be, and what percentage of the property will you get for your £20k?

What are the flats worth normally, and do you see their value holding?

edit:// Do you have 20k? Or are you planning to borrow for that? If so, you'll be paying off your loan /mortgage as well as your rent every month.

Well all depends on how well you want to eat, you can go on 2 packs of noodles a day if you like.. So that would be like 1.50 Euro a week :)

Or WHAT you eat, eating well is subjectional ofcourse :p

Like with the 20, i usually eat bread with cheese and ham. Add some drinks and occasional 3 day pot of food(taters and such) and 20 is plenty.

Ofcourse i spend rest of my cash on games, booze, ciggies and women, but that's a choice :p

£20k will get me a flat.

See what Chet asked...he asked some sensible questions.

£20k doesn't sound that much even if it is for a quarter of the property.
Will you have to pay any other service charges?

The "rent" can go up when the property increases in value so make sure you will still be able to afford it if there is an increase...

Yeh looked more into it £20k = 25% ownership, monthly rent of about £100 quid odd plus £80 service charge, so in all looking at around £380-400. With Mortg. payment..

Sod that!

The hunt contiunes!

That's not bad, it's the service charge that is too much however.

If you had savings it would be a good way to go.

Just out of interest, how old are you and how much do you have in savings if you don't mind me asking?

£20-25 a week no bother. Just goto cut out treats/snacks. Bulk buy your meat when its on offer and split and freeze.
