How is saying we have no idea what space is made of or that we don't know what the future holds even remotely religious? :D

Propulsion just needs a fuel source, if we discover a better generator of energy, I dunno, miniature black holes or something (random idea pulled out of thin air) then we can reach close to the speed of light (over a period of time) which falls within the laws of physics as they are currently understood.

I am not saying it will happen, I am saying it could happen, we know virtually nothing about what makes up the world and universe around us.

Because its just another belief people pull out of nothing - once you leave the facts behind your heading into fantasyland.

We haven't discovered a new energy source since the 19th century - radioactivity. Since then we have just engineered applications of these - thats nice but its subject to diminishing returns.

I am saying it could happen, we know virtually nothing about what makes up the world and universe around us.

Virtually nothing? Seriously? We understand the macro universe pretty well - the uncertainties are in the quantum level but since we live in the macro world classical physics is a pretty good guide.

In some ways our civilization has gotten stuck - the arrival of computers has been nice but they arent ever going to give you fundamentally new viewpoints to create the kind of radical jump we need to make - it could also be a symptom of the over-specialisation of modern academics pushing the brightest minds down narrow fields.

I like what you say about modern academics - totally agree. Everyone is encouraged to be a specialist and generalists / expertise in more than one field is frowned upon (and is difficult to really achieve).

I wouldn't say we've got stuck - compare what we've achieved over the past 150 years, or even 50, to the previous.

We've achieved so much - I think we are waiting for the next big discovery. Perhaps it seems like there aren't any more to be had - but that's the point.

Quantum computers - yet to bear fruit.

Graphene - yet to be implemented.

Who knows wtf Graphene will enable with electronics.

This ffs! It's bloody magic made real :

Yeah and if you travel faster than 12 miles an hour your head falls off.

The simple fact is that we are making advances all the time, in medicine, in computers, in physics. To say or even imply that we won't make many more advances in the future of mankind is pretty weird and pretty much how people thought in the middle ages.

Anyway, I cba to argue the point so you can continue to believe we are at the pinnacle of human invention if you like.

I don't think you can see the wood from the trees - most people can't - we have advanced in certain fields but in terms of overcoming newtons laws as pertaining to a spaceship - no.

Medicine is an arguable one - the increases in life duration are down to better sanitation/food/heating/lack of mass wars etc.

ASk a person who was an adult in the '50s how possible things seemed back then that we have now and you'll realise how far we will be in 30 years.

Probably far worse with an increasingly small number of people supporting an enormous ageing population.

Oil at incredibly high prices.

Power outages due to lack of energy investment.

In the 50s they had cheap oil, a young demographic, cars, fridges, washing machines and mass employment.

Its a nice trick but I remember promises of room temperature superconductors nearly 30 years ago and here we are :)

1986 was when the first High Temperature Superconductive material was discovered and despite a huge amount of research since then we basically have no idea how they bloody work :p Since the record now for a HTS is around 100K (-173 Celcius) we have a long long way to before reaching room temperature.

Towling off after a shower.

I need one of those turbo hand-dryers you get in restaurant toilets. But modified twelve times wider, twice as warm, and about 7 ft long so it does my whole body in 8 seconds. Four of them. Step in. Push button. Exit 8 seconds later feeling dry. Like you've just been coughed on by a friendly giant lion.

I've seen such things in Great Yarmouth of all places. They have them at the exit of the water slide and charge wet, miserable, shivering kids a quid to go in them :D

Just don't towel off, does wonders for your body when it can basorb that extra water ;)

If you just run a towel through your hairy bits, it's suprisingly fast to dry up.

No idea, been on hold for an hour to TSB. It's the only number I could find on their website. My phone battery will run out before they pick up!

It's sorted now though I wish I used the house phone, 95 minutes to get through to them. What a joke that was.
