16 months isn't "spoiled" its a toddler. Problem with this story is there's no indication of how long the kid was crying for, but kids cry, especially toddlers, and John Lewis staff were flat out wrong. You go over and see if you can help, not throw the mother and child out.

Some children are just cryers, it's not always a reflection of bad or overly lenient parenting.

I'm sorry, I must have missed the part in the article where they described the parent as 'grinning' while this happened.... I'm being pedantic, Raven, in reaction to your sarcasm. I actually get annoyed at screaming kids too, but I don't go around passing off possible explanations as fact when I wasn't there, don't know the kid (whether spoiled or otherwise) and don't know the parent (useless or not).

Parenting 101 - If your kid starts throwing a tantrum for what ever reason, you ignore them, you carry on with your business.

Doing what you suggested - Leaving the shop until they calm down is possibly the worst thing you can do, they learn they can throw a tantrum, and you'll leave the shop - exactly what they want you to do.

John Lewis was absolutely correct to apologise, they completely undermined the parents.
