Java's fine when its not consumer facing, but it can be a pain in the arse when it is. Like Raven says, the constant updates are irritating and its often out of date on corporate networks because IT admins don't let the peons keep it up to date themselves.

There's a Java implementation on my NAS (Synology) that is supposed to allow you to search and transfer files from your local PC to the NAS and back in its File Manager tool; it never works. Its clearly something on the NAS itself because it doesn't work on any of my PCs that connect to the NAS, despite Java always being kept up to date, and its a constant irritation.

This. When you're supporting enterprise wide applications and the user workstations fall behind on their java versions, it causes all sorts of fucktard incident raising. The teams that support the desktops can be wanky about it as well.

Luckily it is just me and the IT guy that have admin privileges. We have people that actually question whether they should open the attachment called bankaccountscam.exe or whatever. Some people should be given a pen and a bit of paper to work on.

After 2 years I have finally got everyone here away from having local admin. Everyone knows the "Install" user password so they can still install stuff but now it can't be accidental. Funnily we have not had a virus in 2 months and nobodies machine is running slowly because it had 15 bars running in IE.

We're pretty locked down but I had to get admin privileges for the online team because the blocked sites list in particular is absurd; most social media is blocked (we run the company Facebook page), "gaming" sites are all blocked (we work for the Lottery), "file sharing" is blocked, which includes the likes of Basecamp (which we use with developers). Its a bit bonkers. I sometimes think the IT department would rather we all weren't there so then nothing would break.
