Get back home after being in the US for a week to find a nice trail of ants walking across the hallway. "No, you can't move in my tiny little friends" .. time to get some insect spray.

Of all the comments I've seen today on there about father's day it's half and half between people saying how wonderful their dads are and people competing to try to find the most "poignant" thing to say because their dad died and they want everybody to know they're still marking the day because they're just such incredible people.

"Happy father's day to my amazing dad" who isn't even on fucking Facebook to see it. They really are cunts.

I'm starting to see an alarming pattern on Facebook between "Facebook persona" and "real life persona" in that good guys are generally transparent on Facebook, but those who are a bit irritating in "real life" are annoying as FUCK on Facebook. I've unfollowed those sorts, but today I took a peek at their Facebook feeds - yep, there it is; ten pictures of their dad and "ZOMFG BEST DAD EVER, LOVE YOU DAD". These bell-ends are in their 30s as well.

I could do with a new car and was thinking of a beemer. I really don't want to give up my Type-R - it's been 100% reliable despite never really being serviced properly and thrashed *hard* for 160,000-odd miles - but the cabin is totes noisy as it's the least well insulated thing known to mankind and a couple of hours commuting can't be doing my ears any good at all. Plus, I could do with a towbar and a roof rack so the car is no longer fitting my needs.

Which is annoying.

@Bodhi - what type of BMW you got? I was thinking of a 5 series GT. But I've heard they're not that reliable any more.

3 series tourer?

Also, what's your yardstick for "reliable"?

I fly several times a month and no matter how much I try to make it a pleasant experience I hate airports... They suck the life out of me... Today I left my cosy apartment at 6am... I'll arrive at my destination 6pm (if I'm lucky)... Already I feel exhausted... I do everything I can, bring entertainment, keep myself hydrated etc etc.... Today's stop over Munich best of a bad bunch....

5 series has a much quieter cabin. Whether I go for the saloon, the GT or the estate is still in the air.

As for reliability -my yardstick is my honda. Which, despite years of neglect, has been totally and utterly bulletproof. I realise that it's unlikely that will happen again but it's certainly something high on my list of consideration. It's why I'd like a couple of alternative suggestions...

Noise cancelling headphones? Planes aren't exactly relaxing. You could get a pair of Bose QC-25's in a bit cheaper duty free. They're still expensive but I hear good things about them.

Try 16 hour direct flight from Dubai to LAX followed by a one and a half drive south down to Irvine. Did two return trips in May alone. I hate flying around these days but part of the job and it is the industry I've worked in for 27 years.
Tomorrow fly to Bahrain for 3 days and then back for a week followed by a week Mauritius, 2 days in Qatar, 2 days in Kuwait and then back to LA :( Bit late for a new career...:(

It's not the noise @Scouse, it's dry sweaty atmosphere
All planes excluding the B787 (Aircon) dehydrate you due to the air cooling. It is bleed air from outside and at 30-45K Ft it has no moisture in it. You should always drink plenty of water on planes, especially any flight over 6 hours.

Cool :)

In that case - would you recommend noise cancelling headphones? I'm thinking of getting the very ones I mentioned.

Bose QC15 over ear or the new QC25 are the best I have used and I've been through most of the top end ones. Bose are great as well if they break. 5 year old pair replaced for $80 with a brand new set.

Airports are horrible. So sterile and over airconditioned. Then you have the air quality in the plane for the actual trip. Ick. Must be a better way so you dont have to turn up so long in advance and wait so long between transfers.

Yesterday on Facebook I did post a picture of my father's memorial at the Golf Club on FB with the caption "Happy Father's Day Dad." as I'd been out to pay my respects to him (bit cold on the Golf course for his birthday in November). As pointed out by Moriath, when your dad has passed away Father's Day can get quite tough, as people tend to mention Dads a lot, and it can get quite difficult not to think about them. But apologies for polluting people's news feed with statements of what an incredible person I am.

You insufferable fucking cock.

I have a pair, they're great. Lovely earpads and head strap, all cushioned with softy leathery stuff. They're quite light too. They come with a nifty carry case that protects them when you stuff it in your bag. I can't fault them.

It's extremely sad and I'm sorry for your loss @Bodhi , but I see it from Callous' perspective; grief in my opinion should stay private. I don't understand the need to publicise it, but everyone deals with grief in their own way. There is some undeniable 'dining out' on public grief (not on your part clearly, I can tell) and Facebook has become an extremely annoying outlet for it. For example, my cousin who died of cancer a few years back still has an active Facebook account (which I don't agree with for a kick off), and some of her pals post on it, most of which is reasonably sensitive but some of it is downright embarrassing like "look at me, I miss you the most!!". The best one yet is that my cousin is a ghost, sending her "signs" such as objects being moved, cold feelings in rooms etc. I find it utterly insensitive and frankly insulting to suggest that she's still alive somehow, communicating from beyond the grave.

called them today. there was nobody availible from the garage to tell me about my car. no records had been made detailing any work done. I couldn't help myself so I got mean and scared their secretary half to death. she apologized perfusely on behalf of the company and I will be called on Monday with the GT's status. naturally this is the (first and) last time I will be doing business with them.

lol they haven't called me. amazing how completely inept they are. I can just feel the bad things coming "well sir, we've done 8000 euros worth of repairs". Mmmm hmmmm, course you have sunshine.

Oh and both Mother and Father's Day are American "let's invent a holiday so we can sell more shit" inventions. I've never paid them a blind bit of attention.

Ah, that would explain why whenever I turned on a TV last week when I was in the US almost every advert was Fathers Day related. The sickly-sweet-candy-schmaltz kind that gives you diabetes just by watching.

Well, I'm sorry for your loss and of course people can and should grieve but why do so many feel the need to do it publicly? Mine died when I was 10 so I guess I'm just less sensitive about that stuff than I would be had it happened more recently.
