I might agree with you when talking about the Zoo's in the old fashioned sense, alot of modern zoo's however are "open" zoo's with plenty of space to roam.
I also think that zoo's play an educational and conservative role (which I'm sure you'll agree is a good thing yes?)

so they can fuck off if they're getting an animal for free just to profiteer

Seems the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria said he was too closely related to giraffes in their breeding program all across Europe and they weren't willing to send him to a private collector or zoo not associated with them because then they couldn't guarantee his well being. Seems reasonable enough to me.
