Pausing a 3 hour podcast video to watch later, coming back and gettng a commercial(as you do), then pausing it again, later pressing play !!!COMMERCIAL TIME!!!! and after skipping it you get sent to the previous pause location on the video. So if you were at 1:45:27, you're now at 00:58:12.

Funnily enough the podcast i as watching had some stuff about advertising and how it's more of them trying to get -some- of the peoples' attention(as it's more effective). So most of the commercials are annoying because they're not aimed at you.

Web advertising is basically designed to interrupt what people are doing, piss them off and make otherwise normal websites unusable, if you have to click a tiny X somewhere to remove the advert for baby food or whatever shit you have zero interest in buying then it is not working as advertising. It should be in the periphery and be far more subtle and suitably aimed.

We discussed this before, some people thought it was great seeing web page size adverts telling them about the latest Hilary Mantel bottom wiper that they had to click the "fuck off" button to get rid of all over the content they wanted to see, others people agreed that having to watch an advert for tampons before watching a funny cat video on youtube was right up their (back) alley.

Other people thought it was a complete waste of everyone's time.

*sigh* Once again, "web advertising" isn't a single thing, its a bunch of different techniques. Some are intrusive (pop-ups etc.), others are actually useful (PPC), a bunch are neither here nor there as they're effectively passive. Personally I don't spend budget on intrusive ads because they're usually more expensive to buy despite getting lower click-through (go figure), but I spend a buttload of money on PPC (because it works) and a little bit on banners (because they work if they're cheap enough or as reinforcement for your PPC). So web advertising works if you do it right. Secondly 90% of the content you browse would be gone (including the pr0n) if advertising didn't exist. So please stop being such a self-righteous dick about it. Its really boring.

A lot of content exists for the sole reason to sell advertising.

All advertising is designed to get in the way and distract which ever medium your going to. Tv, web, street. If it's not screaming for you attention in one way or another then they aren't doing their job.

It's a necessary evil in a capitalist society. If you want some thing for free or subsidised. Then it's got to be paid for in another way. It's a blunt tool and they aren't all going to be relevant.

Not. True. The most powerful advertising medium in the world currently is Google paid search and most people using it don't even realise they're clicking on an ad, because its not "getting in the way", quite the reverse in fact.
