A friend who works at BT told me that the India move was a customer service disaster that actively increased customer churn. Most big companies use a thing called Net Promoter Score (NPS) to measure customer satisfaction and theirs fell through the floor.
The joys of having a monopoly to abuse!

I don't really care where a call center is I have as much trouble understanding a thick Gerodie accent as I do a Indian one.

I remember one large customers call centre I visited that was basically staffed by the local college students, 90% of which were British Indian. I lost count the number of times people assumed they were in Bangalore or whatever and refused to talk to them.

Customer: "Stop fucking calling me, why don't you annoy people where you're from instead!"

Agent: "What, Wembley?"

I heard this a while ago, but not sure how true it is. Some major companies have theirs in Scotland because apparently a Scottish accent is the easiest to understand over the phone.

People definitely prefer some accents over the phone, that's why there are lots of call centers in Scotland, Newcastle and Liverpool but none in Birmingham. No one likes the Brummie accent.

Gateway used to have thiers in southern Ireland, the calls were always answered by soft spoken Irish girls, it was great

Not Liverpool. Scouse accents are deemed untrustworthy, Manchester accents are seen as aggressive, Yorkshire and Scottish accents are the best for financial services because they're seen as prudent. All rubbish cultural stereotypes of course but stereotypes are amazingly influential.

Unfortunately, my experience of Indian call centres has been coloured by total incompetence rather than any issues with an accent.

I guess it depends on the service. I've been to *lots* in Liverpool doing customer service and car dealership / sales related. Their stereotype is they are seen as "chatty" and personable over the phone. But yeah, I wouldn't want to get a loan from one :p

People who consistently don't do their jobs properly and are proud of the fact and are seemingly incapable of carrying out simple requests, who then get pissy when you go over their head.

All I want is some fucking Euros for a work trip. Been asking for them for weeks and the trip is this weekend.

Tevez getting away with not doing the majority of his community service cos hes moving to Italy then the courts saying it has nothing to do with his footballer status... Yeah cos the fine you gave him of a few grand; the majority of the population could pay that with a few hours work... Ffs. Im sorry but this celebrity worshipping planet is fucking annoying. Fine him a few million, fines should be relative to your posistion in life.

Actually it's quite the opposite. He has been treated like any other person. He is leaving the country, a fine is easier to enforce than getting him to hop on a plane every week to clean the park. Just because he earns silly money doesn't mean he has to pay more in fines. Fines are not means tested, poor people still have to pay their fines.

Not really no - the courts do set lower fines for poor people (based on their disposable income) but it doesn't scale up for the very rich so they end up getting fined 0.000001 % of their income.

Fines are a punishment. If you're poor then the punishment is much harsher than if you're rich.

Fines should be a percentage of your total net worth.

At that point fines are not a deterrent for the poor. As even 50% of fuck all is still fuck all.

Johnny layabout (who incurs most fines) would pay fuck all if that was the case.

Rubbish. Why would you have to reduce the level of fines paid by Johnny layabout?

Edit: For example, if you currently receive a £60 fine for a driving offence then that can be considered the base level.

You then work out average worth, and increase fine proportionally for people richer than that so the punishment is commensurate with your wealth.

How much extra would that cost do you reckon, how many £60 fines are issued (For driving offences alone!) a year? How many people would they need to employ just to process and work out fine amounts? It would swallow up any income generated by fines. Sounds like some lefty idea to employ more chair testers in the public sector, Blair would be proud!

A flat rate for all is the easiest and cheapest way to go.

It's also the most unfair, unfortunately. If I was rich enough, I'd always park exactly where I wanted and just pay the fine. It's illegal to wheelclamp now so there's very little downside.

Not really the fairest way as the rich can pay to break the law with impunity if all there is is a fine.

Yeah but do you want to pay more in taxes to cover the cost of fines due to the amount of extra staff and expense in working out fines? Just to punish a few rich people.

We could just tax rich people into the ground so they all move away, they wont be a problem then!
