Went thru this recently when lost 6-7 stone last yr - funny enuff I was always skinny but think I put most of it on cos of playing daoc and boozing.

What worked for me anyhow was:

a) Having main meal at work and not keeping any food in the house cept 1 slimfast type milkshake at night and apples, raw carrots, etc, to snack on. Can't be tempted then. You can snack on fruit as pretty much as much u like, u get sick of it before u have too much anyhow.

b) Sold the car. Walk to work, 4-6 miles at day, no choice but to exercise now, feel better for it.

c) Gave up booze a few months. Alcohol is double whammy, it makes u fat in itself, also it fucks up ur will power so u just want to eat. After a few pints u cannot give less of a shit about a diet or loosing weight. Neither can you when u wake up the next morning with a stinking hangover. When I went back on the booze, I put back on 2 stone in 4 months. U have to be careful here :)

Other thing is if u loose weight too fast, u only start loosing muscle mass in addition to the fat (the body thinks it's starving). Which slows down ur metabolism and then makes it harder to loose more or keep it off.

You can expect to loose weight v fast at first anyhow - I lost something like 1.5 stone in the first 2 weeks, or 2 stone in 10 days, can't remember, was something totally crazy. After things settle down you want to be looking at 2 pounds a week or so.

well how i did it was like this:

have big meal for breakfast and big lunch and have cereal for dinner, basically turn your eating habits upside down, youll have more energy through the day and longer to burn off the calories rather than a large dinner and then sleeping on it.

brown rice is a life saver, cook up a big pan full and then tub it and have a bowl for breakfast, add tomatoes, celery, peppers (any veg you like but this is what I had) my breakfast was rice, mackeral veg and chilli paste cook in m/wave for 5 mins and youll be full of energy.

lunch i have salad (spinich watercress and rockett, buy pre washed so much easier) with extra virgin olive oil as a dressing (about a tea spoon) chuck on some sunflower or pumpkin seeds and half a can of tuna (canned mackeral is also very good fish in omega 3 oils are mackeral, sardines and pilchards try and have at least 2 of these a week, you can mix em in with the rice) if you use tinned fish use fish in brine or spring water, also i have black olives instead of salt and a whole meal pita bread.

dinner either muslie with chopped dried apricots and rasins (great thing i use is ground cinamon instead of sugar on my cereal its soo nice!) or ryvita with hummous or guacamole or cream cheese (low fat) cellery sticks or a piece of fruit.

snacks:

rasins, mixed unsalted nuts, fruit, banana chips, ryvita with peanut butter (they do sweet ryvita with honey sesame seeds and rasins they are quite nice) cellery sticks with hummous/guacamole whatever.

i know it sounds dull but it is great i checked it all out and it gives you all the stuff you need so you wont suddenly be keeling over and dying from malnourishment lol. also try not to eat after 8pm and cut soda's and stuff right out at first until you start losing the weight because then you wont be on an uphill battle, sparkling water with a slice of lime or lemon is nice, sparkling water with cranberry juice is also nice.

umm what else? oh yeah lol exercise, the gym is ok but it didnt work for me i spent months ( and a small fortune) at the gym and it didnt help at all, I started working out at home and it worked a lot better for me, its a personal thing, I got a lateral thigh trainer for about £50 from ebay did 20 mins morning and evening and then some floor work, started walking whenever it was practical all the usual crap.

the main thing to remember is not to stress yourself about it because then, if your anything like me youll stress eat lol and its counter productive. BMI isnt that great because it doesnt take muscle or bone density in to account, one of the main things i'd suggest is go to your doctor and ask for advice, get a medical cholesterol, blood pressure etc etc and buy a set of scales I weight myself every saturday morning before brekkie and write it on the calander then you can see progress and its a nice feeling :)

I lost an awful lot of weight over the last year but in a safe and tbh painless way, it really is a whole lifestyle change and if you want any help (recipies, support anything) please PM me because ive been there, done it and now the t shirt doesnt fit any more :)

also my bf is a "high and mighty" or as he calls it "big and fat" bloke and I help him and know what its like for a guy, so if you need me im 'ere

anyhoo good luck with it, you really can do it!

What i basically meant was, if you avoid foods with a high GI, the insulin spike and consequently over-shooting of blood sugar/dropping below a normal level is what will make you feel tired & hungry.

If you stick to low GI carb sources then the insulin response is much lower as the release of energy is much slower, therefore you feel fuller for longer :)

if you avoid foods with a high glycemic index you won't get an insulin spike, nor the accompanying bloodsugar-swing, because low-GI foods will release their energy a lot slower....

not really... infact the opposite:

so what you said is that if you avoid high sugar foods, you will feel tired and hungry... but I think you ment that if you eat foods with high GI :p

Bleh. Low carbs atm, brain functioning properly not :(

Most supermarkets have a range of low calorie microwave meals. Beauty of em for diets - is they all about 400 calories, you know what's in em - and you can't mess about with the portion size like you do when you cook urself.

They're also full of crap, much better to cook up your own stuff imo.

Can't go wrong with 100g chicken breast, small serving of rice and as much veg as you like ;)

fish is good for you but okey here goes :D
1. get some chicken put it in the oven with like garlic, salt, black peppar on it and maybe chili if u like it hot, pour some olive oil over and go chill for a while. In 175 degree oven it takes about 30-40 min, or more if its frozen chicken. When its like 20 minutes left, chop some tomatoes and red onion and sprinkle on top. Great with brown rice or whatever you like.
2. Another tip that is great if you don't like to cook alot (like i do :D) is buy some carrots, onions, parsnip or green peppers. Put some salt (not alot) and some black peppar + a little olive oil and into the oven, they become really sweet and crunchy and you dont have to do a thing, like 200 degrees for 30ish minutes.

what i can think of atm and gl :worthy:

Be careful if/ when reheating rice - although food poisoning is one of the quickest and easiest ways to lose a few pounds, it's not pleasant :)
Stirfry ftw, for evening meals, it's very quick and healthy, plus you can cram loads of veggies in there.
Variety! And not denying yourself things - beer/ ale/ porter, enjoy them but just don't go mad.
I basically took my friend's advice: 30 mins exercise each day (plus walking to places where I'd normally take the bus, and suchlike) followed by a carby meal (pasta and tomato-based sauce or jacket potato and half a tin of Stagg veggie chilli, that kind of thing - quick and tasty) I've no idea why the carbs after exercising, but he said they're important <shrug> oh, and like Ez said, don't eat too late, you can't metabolise it properly..
What else? I enjoy a drink still, you just have to balance it all properly, I've lost pounds (but more importantly dress sizes) and feel loads healthier, plus let's not forget, drastic weight loss = saggy skin and stretchmarks, possible organ damage, bone and teeth decalcifying, horrible hair and skin... (just like the phet diet). All in all, not a good thing :)
Oh! Also, don't go crazy with fruit juice- fructose is healthier than refined sugar, but it's still sugar (same with honey) and.. gl!!

PJ;

Carb-based meals post exercise are needed to replenish muscle glycogen stores, and eating before bed is ok if you eat the right stuff.

Can you get stretchmarks from weightloss?. I always thought that was only from growing too fast, where the skin is scarred from rapid growth.

afaik you can indeed only get strechmarks by eating, but maybe they get more noticable when you get a bit skin-surplus?
Can imagine if they, like scar-tissue lose a lot of elasticity, while the surrounding skin keeps that elasticity..

Possibly.

Without going into massive detail or planning, lower your carb intake throughout the day :p

If i cut out the 3 bags of crisps, Twix, starbar 2 Mark and spencers short bread cookies and a sausage sandwich from the sandwich van every day I think that will do the trick tbh.

Well this stuff is as much about managing yourself as much as anything.

Personally, I'd much rather eat homecooked food, but am totally incapable of having food in the house without eating it if i'm hungry, or the size of 'healthy' portions to start getting silly. Set meals is just mental games to avoid the problem - 1-a-day and that's the end of it. No pillaging all the ingredients out the fridge 24/7 or 4inch high piles of food on the plate.

It doesn't help much my place is a studio flat with the fridge in the room, within 3 yards of wherever I'm sitting. If someone can trust themselves to have food lying around and not eat it, fine! But imo some of you will know what i'm on about...

Thanks, I did wonder (but I'm a good girl and just do what I'm told, haha)

Like I said, I'm no expert, I got told to not eat carbs after 5pm but I ignored that bit cos it's too impractical, I do my best to not eat after 9 but stick to veggies if I need to. As for the stretchmark bit, yeah maybe it is a 'more noticeable with saggy skin' thing, I've seen a couple of mates lose weight and they're whining about all those red marks on their stomachs and boob area, they never noticed 'em before (male mates, poor buggers)

oh, and ty Tris! Saved me having to dig up evidence on google, I think a lot of people treat rice as 'safe' cos they just don't know, and then spend a nice day or two boking theirselves silly 'but it can't be the rice, sheesh'. I never said it can't be reheated, just be careful :)

Hang on, I made 2 serious posts.. ick... I'm away to be quiet til the football or pervy threads start up :(

Definately Maeloch. When i started cutting the first 4 weeks were fine, i stuck to my diet 100% because the only food i had was that which i needed.

However i went home and there was so much available i couldn't help but nibble from time to time :p

Portion sizes don't have to get silly though, increasing activity works just as well, if not better than reducing food intake.

If you're getting hungry after 9 then look for protein based meals. Particularly cottage cheese/yoghurts/sugar free jelly. The first two are preferable as they contain ingredients to give you a slow release, which reduces the chance of you storing it as fat overnight.

The stretchmark thing: yeah, the skin takes a few months to shrink. If you lose weight slowly u prolly won't notice, but if u lose it fast you will have flappy skin in places and look like a deflated ballon. Have fun getting paranoid about that one. You can google and look at the pics of the extreme cases of it where people with life threatening wieght probs have had a stomach clip and lost like 12+ stone in a year.

I eat when I'm hungry.....

Thing is, when you stop eating crap, and start eating healthy, you somehow lose the hunger for the crap aswell, so it's kinda a non-issue

Vlad - much as I love cottage cheese and yoghurt, anything warm that's ok to eat late at night, except for my beloved veg stirfries? (and no, I'm not getting into the rice wars, ty)
and don't even go down the manfat route, people, tis a genuine question!

I've found a way to reconcile this new serious self with my usual priorities, however - have an extra drink and just dance yer boots off for hours, or play football, instead of watching - or have sex! (not the 'lie back and think of potatoes' kind tho)

Oooh, whilst we're on this subject tho- years ago, my brother had this theory that eating cold food all the time is good for you (because calories = units of heat, cold food burns lots more cals just to eat the damn stuff) Now, I thought 'yep, he's talking crap' but this guy ate loads, and drank loads, and he was a skinny wretch. Git.

And Inga.. yep, true, my bod craves veg and fruit way more than crisps these days, is weird but I'm happy with it

Well, that's somewhat true (the cold food thing) but with a sidenote.
The effect is so minimal, you can pretty much just ignore it :p

If you drink 1 liter of 0deg water, your body needs to raise it to about 38 degrees, which means it takes your body 38 kcal to heat the water, since it takes 1 kcal to heat 1 liter of water 1 degree.
1 twinky is 145 kcal....
50g of potato chips is about 250 kcal....
