Pope has his tounge well up the arse of the right wingers.

Imagine the joy of like 50 million super-conservative Americans ( the bush brigade WASPs) on hearing the pope say that, my I bet a few beers in the bible belt were drank that night.

I meant, Christians havent started wars based on their religion, but you already knew this, you just wanted to make a point about how you hate america

This could be argued. If Christians would 'spread civilization' over savage territories because they feel they are God's chosen ones to do so, is this not then starting a war based on religion?

very carefully worded, remind me again what happened outside your lifetime seeing as christinaity is approximately 1970 years old, the last classical crusade (supposidly in the name of christianity by a country), was (approx.) 1320 years after christianity was concieved.

Islam is approximately 1350 years old, the last Islamic crusade was in 1453, 796 years after Islam was concieved.

In short there have been no real wars over the above religions in the last 554 years (a war being one between 2 countries/states).
But as said previously arguably America could have gone to war over religion based on the fact that Bush said god told him to do it

back on topic, i fail to see why anyone in this thread is surprised that this happened, its not exactly new news that the extremist "clerics" (i personally believe they dont deserve this title as they dont serve their religion at all), are using it as ammo.

I personally laugh at everyone in this thread bashing religion in one way or another, so accoording to you its ok to invade a country over oil, land, political influence etc etc but as soon as religion is mentioned in the loosest context you all start your little quest to get as many insults in as you can before the thread is locked. I would rather have a religion than be like you (ones mentioned above) to be frank, you arent as tolerant as you delude yourself into thinking you are.

Are you really that naive mate?
All that would happen if there was no religion is people would find other "excuses" for war such as lets say "democracy"

yup so true. The extremists who are fighting the "Holy War" would find another reason to war, you think they would stop? They are using Religion as an excuse. The real Community are sickened and frustrated with the extremists as in all cases the few ruin for the many

Millions of people have died under the sign of the cross, the half moon or whatever false god. Religions claim more casualties than any other ideology.
Sure, the earth wouldn´t turn into happy-scrappy-hero-pop land all of a sudden and yes, there would still be wars. But without religious fanatics, the ammount of rational thinking people would increase. That´s not naive, that´s evolution.

all i think is that muslims get freaked over things more than christans....

when muslims slag christians, then they would prob say much... just mention that that happened and pla pla pla.... but turn it around and we have suicide bombers, ppl killed, ppl taken hostage..... threats made that citys will blow up and shit like that....

not saying that christians are good and stuff.. they are evil too.... they have started wars that have cost houndreds of thousands of lives.
allso started war in iraq... etc etc

i feel that both sides are equal at evilness lvl :p

but why do i feel that muslims are the bad guys and christians are good.... good brainwashing i guess we get from tv and other information channels.... need to fight it in my head

PS... enyone selling tinfoil hats ?

Wouldnt the fanatics find something else to be fanatical about? Rational people can be religious, but I'd agree that knowledge would bring about peace when it comes to religion. People dont actually know what they believe in, and so it makes no difference to them if people say "Lets kill everyone because God said so". If you turned round and said to them "Actually, your beliefs condemn violence" the would probably kill you too :(

So, basically they're upset over one sentence that's not even the Pope's own words? A sentence that as it happens fits perfectly in a logical discussion of wether "a God" is bound by reason?

Well, what can I say about that, if you get upset enough by a cartoon to burn flags, I guess you can get upset by anything.

Christianity has kept on going for so long through oppression and through fear. the church has been one of the most corrupt institutions in history, sure it may be all about happy clapping these days but its only over the last 150 odd years that it has had to change the way it opporates. It has evolved with the times, islam on the other hand has not. Most muslims are no different from christians were 500 years ago with the banning or catholosism in England and the murder of roman catholics. obviously there was more behind it than just religion, Henry 8th wanted an male heir etc. but the result was much the same, the religion was not tolorated. some muslim states do allow other religions, even Iraq has quite a few christians.

Would be interesting on seeing other peoples comments on this hot subject. Will post my views shortly, just discussing it in the office.

I'm not religious. In fact I feel religions have been doing a lot more bad for the little good they have done. Like someone wiser then me once said "I have no problem with god. It's his fanclubs I have issues with."

But in this case I feel I need to jump to the pope's defence. He didn't say these things. He quoted them, someone else said them. He didn't say he agreed or disagreed with them he just raised them so people could think about them and form their opinions of it. He actually said this twice, you know, to make sure no-one could misunderstand it... but what do you know the entire world did.

my point is mate, the vast majority of casualties are not because of religion but because of some other agenda be it political, financial or territorial. You will be very hard pressed to find a war/confilct of any sorts soley over religion.
Not meaning this in a bad way but you are clutching at straws, Hitler percecuted anyone who wasnt the "ideal" german (jews werent the only ones percecuted they were simply the ones who held the majority and concequently made the most noise about it), the varous holocausts in places in Africa are not over religion yet these 2 instances alone considerably outweigh any relgious conflict in bodycount/on going problems, are you saying that is rational thinking?
There will be no more rational thinking than there is now

The head of one of the worlds most popular religions should be smart enough not to make inflamatory remarks in prepared speeches/lectures.

This was not an off-the-cuff remark at a press conference under quick fire questioning.

thing is mate, the pope isnt christianity
neither is the church.
Christianity is a ideal, which some follow.. i doubt Jesus himself ever intended a religion to be so controlled seeing as it is supposed to (in theory at least) be up to the individual to explore their own path into what they do and do not believe.
Priests are merely there for guidance should you want/need it, at least thats what i understand it to be.

But i'll stop :p i dont want to steer this discussion on a tangent as its a pretty interesting one as it is :)

it wasn't a derogatory remark, the media, press etc etc took it out of context as they usually do to sell more papers
The pope also explained himself more thouroughly and apologised for any misunderstanding (first time he has apologised for anything). Personally i think he's a pretty good pope

I know what you mean, but that's not true. The pope represents christiany and catolicism, and that's why every church in my country its bound to the vatican.

Of course, the power of the pope nowadays it's not the same they had centuries ago. But their words can still start a war, islamism doesnt need much more than some threw-to-the-air words said by someone like the pope.

My english is a shit so maybe i didnt explain it the way i liked ;) sorry.

I said inflamatory, you said derogatory

In the seventh conversation...the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels", he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

To quote a former pontif saying "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman" in a section of a speech concerning propagation of a faith is inflamatory.

The catholic church has justified colonisation by catholic states and forced conversion of natives in south america for example as part of spreading the "good word".
If he wanted an example of the wrong way to spread a faith, he should have looked at the Catholic Church's own past and explained what went wrong, instead he singled out Muslims as an example, which was hypocritical and inflamatory.

Perhaps he forgot Jesus' teachings on the matter

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye?

Or how will you tell your brother,'Let me remove the speck from your eye;' and behold, the beam is in your own eye?

You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.
