BBC News - Full text: Clegg reform speech

Nick Clegg's speech, it is long, but worth it.

Both the Tories and Lib dems are actually following through on what they have promised.

Finally a government that seems so far to respect that they are there to serve the people, not control them.

Promises. From the Conservatives. It all looks rosy, and then all the promises are broken. Why is this so familiar to me?

well I am quite hopeful about this gov. it seems that we have two parties that will balance eachother out nicely (if done properly) and both seem to be actually interested in what they can do not *ah hem* grabbing the PMship that they felt entitled to and flogging the guts out of it ^^

But they have only been in power for a few days so I am reserving any judgement until they have found their feet; though people will blame them for things the last gov. did and the mess they left and this one has a really tough job of clearing that up and establishing their own reputation.

Good luck to them though, this is my country and it is in my best interest to hope they succeed, I know there are people who hope they will make a cock up of it but that's kind of shooting yourself in the foot because you have to live with the consequences.

Surprised how the tories are coping with Clegg after labeling him of being "somewhat alien" to the british, being from dutch/rusian ascendants and being married to a spaniard woman.

To be fair they'll be rubbing their hands together, because regardless of the polcies and other shite going on, I actually trust Nick Clegg, he seems as genuine as anyone we will ever get and having him around is a good thing.

Try and remember the last time anyone was genuinely excited by something a politician said? Or the last time a politician was unambiguous?

I certainly don't remember any in the last 20 years.

There aren't too many Accountants or business owners happy with the Conservative u-turns on the £1 million inheritance tax threshold or sudden Lib Dem policies on capital gains tax I can tell you.

You can't enforce all your own policies in a coalition government. At the moment this coalition has a lot of positive energy and is focusing on the better policies of both, not just the vote winning headliners.

this is my country

Step aside Liz, there's a new girl in town. :D

Seriously - interesting speech. I hope he can follow through on some of these proposals. I do worry in some ways, an example:

In our legislative programme we will be setting out plans to strip away government's unelected, inefficient quangos, plans to loosen the centralised grip of the Whitehall bureaucracy, plans to disperse power downwards to you instead.

Great matey - tell me how you plan to do it. This does seem exciting politically for Britain but until we see firm ideas how, it's actually no different lingo to the labour spin we saw under Blair.

I notice he doesn't say anything about Cameron himself and what will get by. Still, a nice read,

Well most of what he said was Tory policy set out in their manifesto. He gave this speech as he has been appointed to oversee change of legislation and constitutional reform.

It's a sad case when we expect all politicians to be devious, lying bastards but that's the way politics has been going in the UK and it's not a modern attitude.

Reading Nick Clegg's speech or whathaveyou on political reform made me think that I finally might believe in Santa Claus; then I was wondering what underlying devious plans were behind it. Frankly if he can deliver even half the stuff he says he wants to regarding reform then politics is going to become a whole new ball game. If he manages to do this then he is going down in history as an "honest politician" - scarey thought :eek2:

That's just hot air, and if anyone thinks that speech was full of factual engagements, well you're wrong. He threw in a few "Ok ok guis, no ID Cards" and then "Power will be all yours!".

Yes, Power will be yours is very good, if it wasn't just an empty phrase.

I wouldn't be that giddy about that speech, if anything, it makes me raise the eyebrow higher.

Did you read the full speech? Because there was a lot more there than just no ID card.

There were actual solid commitments as to what changes they plan. Something that politicians rarely do.

You really don't like it when someone disagrees with you do you. Don't worry hunnybunny, some tory m8s will come and reassure you your right, right, right and always right, like duhh.

I voted for Labour Zede, and I am of the same opinion of Ch3t. The speech itself was kind of refreshing, and if 50% of what he covered come to pass, it's going to be a great forward step for our country.

Zede, we have all got the picture. You are in tears that your precious labour rightfully lost, and you blame the Freddyshouse crew that voted for anyone but labour. You can stop going on about it because you dont bring a single thing to any political conversation apart from insults. It is getting boring.

In regards to the speech.
Getting rid of ID Cards is good, was a massive waste of money.
Sorting out the DNA database is good, afteral they breaking their own laws by keeping information longer then they should.
Sorting out the anti-terror laws is good. They abused too much.

however
They talk about taking away powers of survelliance etc. With luck this will only be in regards to stopping councils being able to survey you for things like schools. Survelliance needs to be retained for things that cost the country money wrongfully etc (Benefit fraud etc).

Dismayed about there no talk about fixing deportation of criminals. I think this country needs to put in a ruling that states that the Human rights act can not be used to prevent the deportation of criminals and terrorists.
It is crazy that there is currently a terrorist that should be getting deported, but the courts ruled the human rights act will not allow it, even though it is highly likely that they will try to plan and excute a terrorist attack on the public AGAIN!

I guess its a bad thing if you like being told how to think and don't mind losing your rights. Lazyness and having no control over your destiny go hand in hand with socialism though.

It still puts a smile on my face, after 13 years of our rights being slowly taken away by a power hungry Nu Labour we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

It also makes me laugh that typical Labour voters go on and on about Thatcher and the 80s yet support a Labour government who are more 80s Tory than the current Tory party. Newsflash, Nu Labour are very different to what the Labour party was created for. They are now all about control and centralised power, they don't care for your rights or your feelings and they absolutely hate having people question them. People like Zede need to man up and take control of their own lives without relying on wankers like Labour to tell them what to do.

Go Go Tory/Libs you have a massive job to do to reverse the damage caused by Labour and their mindless followers but I am confident they can do it.

lol, not once, anywhere in the entirety of freddyshouse have i said i support labour. I thought Gordon Brown was a cock. As far as cocks go though - cameron is going to have more sycophants trying to slide up his greasy pole than Brown ever had.

I voted lib dem, and like many lib dems, I wish they had not gone to bed with the scum.

It's very bold and would have been rubberstamped the other week when the tories and libdems where negotiating. Difficult to backtrack from and I'd say it is what it says on the tin, but will just have to wait and see.
