Has anyone been following the development?

I've had a quick read through a few of the beta test logs - sounds like it's gonna be fun.

Anyone know much about it?

Yeah I been following it for a while, awsome idea, if they get it working right it could be a real laugh. Just have to wait and see I guess. I thought Earth & Beyond sounded like a good idea till I played it .. and we all know what its like to play

concept of the game is wicked, the game looks wicked, and looks like it may be the fpsa that takes a step foward among the online scene

Massively Multiplayer FPS with (it appears) Jetpacks and flying vehicles.

The only thing that worries me is the game's netcode. If games like BF1942 can start generating lag with 40+ players, how will this game handle 500+?

As with all MMO games it'll be a monthly subscription, meaning that you'll be playing on their servers and I'm sure they've invested in some serious kit to power the thing. I just hope it's not a big let down as I'm really looking forward to some serious online wars.

I can't see it being a problem whipped. Comparing BF1942 servers and MMORPG servers...well there ain't no comparison. If daoc can handle 3000 monkeys running around chucking spells at each other then I think we'll be ok.

I played Neocron recently which is a FPS based MMORPG. Had big fights in that that went on for a few hours, defending a control room whilst some guy hacked the mainframe was quite fun, suppose its a taster for Planetside.

Freelancer would've been good, if it had been proper MMO style instead of "carry your closed character around different servers" ala Diablo 2.

Then again, the combat in Freelancer - as great as it is - doesn't lend itself to a MMO environment. Maybe someday, when everyone is on a broadband/DSL-speed connection as a minimum we'll actually get some proper real-time combat in MMOs instead of all this predictive wank.

PS. Burn all modems.

I've pre odered freelancer, and I just heard theres no Joystick support. I couldn't believe it. Hopefully they'll release a patch with it included.

I expect they'll have it so that different areas of the map are spread across many servers like EQ and DAoC. And hopefully you'll be playing in a bubble so that your client will ignore anything outside your sphere of influence.

That said, I'd bet a fair amount that it will be jerkier than an episode of baywatch when you've got 100+ players in the same area.

Tribes2 was playable just fine with 90+ people on a standard 512k cable connection (and you could *just about* get around with a modem!).

Admittedly the server used to fall over all the time....
