I never got into PS1, but i'm considering this as my new "shoot people in the face and steal their pants" game. Just hoping it goes F2P because i'm not sure i can cough up 12€/month for a shooter.
Pretty confident that it won't be F2P. Hell they haven't made the original F2P yet and that game is dying. :)

Wikipedia (yeah) says they are making it F2P with buying extra stuff as their way of making money.

Looking forward to PS2 aswell, I remember a few years back when PS1 ws to be released all the talk on FH about it. Seemed alot of old DAoC chaps where dissapointed with it though, still remember "Nuked"'s sour remarks about the game :)

This one looks like it could really be worth the money though.

Have a look at these vids !

Seems really good to be honest, I'm hyped :) Hope they really make it possible for small scale group vs group fighting aswell and not only zerg gameplay.

The day and night cycle is awesome. Them using nvidia Physx is gonna make it painful for AMD users but I'm back on Nvidia myself so think its good, physx when working sure can make some spectacular things ( batman AC for example ).

Depends how they do it. It's SOE we're talking about, look at how they handle EQ2's F2P. almost EVERYTHING is locked until you pay for it. Sure most of it is one time payments but there's so MANY of them.. :(

I have 9 lvl 90's in EQ2 and i can't play any of them because they are either a locked class or a locked race...

What did people bot in PS?

I'd like to know too. I played on an off for about 2 years and never saw anything that suspicious, although I've read there was supposed to be quite a lot of cheating going on (speed hacks, transparent geometry, the usual suspects).

Speed hacks, aimbots some even used teleport hacks and sony did fuck all about it 99% of the time.

They did. They had CSM's online roaming each and every battle nabbing botters and hackers. Problem is that the technology for finding them were pretty basic at the time in all MMO's. And player reports (especially in PS) were damn unreliable because they would report someone just because they got killed by him/her... I got reported myself god knows how many times purely because i was decent with a sniper rifle.

That said, PS didn't die because of cheaters though. It died because of Core Combat. :)

I want to argue against that but i don't think i could make it even a little bit convincing... (assuming my arguments are EVER convincing that is...) :p

TR obviously. It's the only empire worthy of existence, and you either join us or you die. It's that simple. :)

I don't understand, do you fight in a seamlessly connected world, where you can roam around and capture objectives or do you join battlefields with a player cap to generate points for your faction?

Its open world. Take the bases and defend them. Basically like keeps in DAOC but in an FPS game. Add to that drop ships, tanks, APCs, squads.

There is a player cap for each continent though, around 2000 (666 per side) I think for a map that's about 8km².

Aye pretty much that.

But there are multiple continents, so everyone won't be fighting in the same one or around the same base. And they are not seamlessly connected either that i know of like it is in DAoC with the zones there. You still have to load to the individual continents, but after that it's one big open world.

And because taking an entire continent can take many days you won't be zoning all that often either.

Okay, so you basically pick a continent to play on, which is a big warzone, that can hold max 2000 players at the same time.

Seems pretty fun, is there some rank hierarchy with command structure or is it just run around and kill stuff like in COD?

The first Planetside had a separate XP system whereby you earned command ranks as opposed to battle rank, essentially giving you additional leadership tools as opposed to certs for other battle skills. One of the tools was the ability to speak to people of a similar command rank in a private channel, allowing decisions to be made which could then be broadcast to the rank and file.

What tended to happen was that some good leaders emerged and people would prefer to follow them, usually people who led large outfits anyway and the zerg would throw themselves at the walls of a base until they became bored or captured it. It wasn't uncommon to see the more organised outfits (guilds) hotdropping onto bases, having a pilot provide the facility for randoms to do the same, organising MAX crashes (many MAX units, one door) or tank columns and air support. There are definite objectives and people do largely adhere to them. Of course there were utter muppets who fecked about but if you're in a good organised oufit that's not usually a problem.

The command structure in PS2 I think is more or less actively certing in a leadership tree for these tools rather than earning experience by actively leading squads. They can also create custom missions of some sort so there ought to be more iincentive to follow orders too, which is always nice.

You can switch between continents. PS1 had, 10? continents each with a varied ecosystem and conditions. Snow, Tundra, Brushland, Desert...Lava. You switched between them at warp gates.

There were no central hubs or capital cities, but i've heard a rumour that there will be a faction city this time around.

Theres a long talky video here....

which covers the spending of certs and the gaining of certs, which are the leveling currency really.

Have they officially confirmed it's going to be F2P yet?

Yes, it's not on the website yet but it was stressed in the stream last night by one of the developers that it's F2P, Vid below of the executive producer explaining in a bit of a convoluted way why (2 minutes 45 seconds in):

Also, a gameplay rules videomabob for anyone wondering:

That map in the vid reminds me of the original problem with the game that stopped me playing: You can't win.

You'd push the NME back, the whole map would be blue (or red, or purple) just before you went to bed, you'd get up and it'll all be another colour. There's no push for an "endgame" followed by a map reset.

Having said that, I'll check the gameplay vid out. If they've implemented an epic end-of-game win-or-lose battle when one side owns the map then I'm all for it :)
