NTL to cap broadband

You sound like an intelligent person Scouse, I have the feeling that you know that what NTL are doing is "just", but are just arguing about the semantics of the word "unlimited" for the sake of arguing. Right? Wrong?

I don't see it as arguing pedanticly m8. I do think that people are being misled.

Eg. Filesharing is one of the major drivers behind broadband installs at the moment. Of all the people I know who've upgraded to broadband (maybe 30 I know face-to-face so to speak) all but 2 of them have done it for filesharing reasons. (Myself and another m8 who's a gamer have done it for ping and patches).....

When they signed up to the Broadband services they asked the relevant questions (not all of them are very technically competent) - including like "is there a cutoff point" and "is it ok to use Kazaa" etc......

Ta for the compliment tho m8 :)

When they are told things along the lines of "yes - all day if you like".... then I'd say that's a fairly big miss-sell....

Hmmmmrmmmmmm...

I'd still say that hitting 1Gb/day consistently, even using KaZaA to download MP3s is unlikely for most people.

The fundamental point of broadband, much like business leased lines, is that when you buy the line - you're not actually really paying for 512kb sustained bandwidth. Or at least, it's expected that you aren't.

E.g. When someone buys a business leased line - they pay for the installation/rental of the line itself (which obviously varies depending on how big the pipe is) and for a bandwidth contract from an ISP who provides Internet connectivity across said line. The two things are entirely seperate and in most cases billed seperately as well.

We have customers here at work who have 2Mb leased lines, and 3Gb/month bandwidth contracts. In theory this customer could max their line out 24/7, downloading at 256kb/sec, they would go over 3Gb in about 3.5 hours. Of course, in business contracts its explicitly mentioned in the T&Cs how much bandwidth they are allowed to use, penalties for going above it, etc.

In consumer terms the limit is more of an implied expectation of the ISP of the bandwidth utilisation based on an "average users usage" (since the whole service is a mass market "one size fits all" one, as opposed to a exacting single-customer specification). But the limit is still there.

I just think it is all too easy and utopic for people to believe that anything in life touted as "unlimited" is exactly that, without any restriction - implied or explicit. Nothing is, in practice.

Durzel - you're expecting people who have absolutely no knowledge of what you're talking about to sort of "know" this magically.

They've asked questions about what "unlimited" and "unmetered" means and got answers.

It's just the answers were actually lies............

just to pop in with some meaningless numbers:

I've monitored my home kit for a week (that's 7 days heh)
workstation: ~1.8Gb total traffic
web&mail: ~280Mb total traffic
that's both internal and external traffic. I haven't gotten into my fw's logs yet, but I hazard that ext traffic is about 1Gb.

Give up Durzel, the argument has been won. We've successfully established:
  • NTL are acting entirely legally
  • NTL are doing the "right thing", in giving the bandwidth-whores a slap
  • Broadband isn't overpriced

The debate has degraded, to arguing individual points, rather than the whole argument. What is Dimebag actually saying? What does he want/think? I really haven't a clue  Scouse seems to be annoyed that NTL advertise their cable as unlimited, whereas it no longer is. This has been covered. They can hardly pull their whole advertising campaign over a completely stupid detail, that 99% of the people who they're trying to persuade to buy cable, won't care about...

How about this:
It's not right for NTL to advertise cable as unlimited, now it no longer is. If they carry on touting it as unlimited, when they next change their advertising campaign, then they're cunts. Happy?

Thread. Closed.

It's a good deal if they EVER BOTHER TO REPLY. I've been waiting 2 months for them to get back to me with an installation date.

Kinda makes me laugh you lot squabbling over 1GB a day when I've downloaded 3 gig in half an hour up here.

According to Mr Smith, the decision to cap the service was taken by Mr Goodland. And it was he who decided not to tell customers because he "didn?t think they were 'Tech' enough to understand".

you're all illiterate fools, say NTL. read more here. with links!

I read that you have to pour a gallon of ice cold water over the card every 10 seconds to stop it exploding.
