I have a Volvo S60 T5, my second one and jesus christ they leave me a broken man. I hated the first one so god knows why I bought another one. Anyway, my car is poorly, compression is down so the piston rings are fucked. I am not spending anymore money on it so I have been car hunting.

I am also tall, 6'4" so space is an issue.

I am 40 this year so do the following make me look a bit sad, you know, a bit boy racer for my age?

Honda Civic Type R, drove one yesterday and loved it, a bit raw if I am honest but all I will be using my new car for is to commute 10 miles a day. I want the reliability and thrill of the Honda but am worried I may look a bit chavvy, after all most people who drive one are twats.

Ford Focus ST 225, not drove one but sat in a couple, they are by far the nicest inside and the steering wheel adjustment is fantastic but the real world fuel consumption scares me.

Renault Megane 225, I hate the look of these some days and love them on others, I have read that they are a softer ride than other similar cars but are they not a bit girly?

Volvo S40 T5, I imagine I would jump at one of these if I could find one close to me, same engine as the ST, lovely interior and grown up, scarey fuel consumption again though.

Mazda 6 MPS, these cars have it all and they are dirt cheap due to the running costs, having said that the consumption is no worse than on my Volvo.

Any ideas on the above or any other cars any of you can think of would be nice. BMW's make me depressed as do Audi's, I would look for a diesel but are they really that much cheaper to run now the price is so much dearer than petrol? Also you seem to pay a premium for economical car's and don't get much for your money.

Ideas appreciated luvs.

Golf TDI 1.9, good on fuel, or if you want bigger, look at the Passat with the same engine

Cue the usual suspects recommending the same old cars :p

I'll say this:

Renault - just ... no.

Type R - great, but if it's commuting then it's stiff suspension and revvy engine may get to you.

Not really much to say about the others.

I have not driven the ones you suggest so can't comment sorry. My current plan is i30 or the new c'eed for the work miles and an RX8 for a bit of fun they are fairly cheap and from the times i have driven them they are fun.

Your mileage isn't high enough to warrant spending on a diesel. If you enjoy driving, why don't you buy something designed around motoring pleasure? Something that will turn heads?

Honda S-2000
Alfa 166
Lotus Elise (although you might only just fit)
Porsche 928/968
Porsche Boxster
TVR Chimaera

Seriously Trem, what's your budget, what's your annual mileage and how much space do you need?

I was going for the sensible option, family car and all that, unless its a second car for getting to & fro from work?

Fuck it, get a Veyron Trem

nasa may be selling off the space shuttles now that they're decommissioned? seems like the only sensible option to me.

BMW's make me depressed as do Audi's,

booo I like the Audi A5. also, as of yesterday I am officially in love with the BMW 325 Coupé. In fact I am so in love with it that I may choose it over the Alfa Brera I have designs for!. Ofc, I have no kids, so *I* will get the Coupé, and *you* must look at the Touring :)

the prices of cars in the UK are truly lolworthy. If I lived there I would own a spectacular car :(

Road Tax, Insurance and Petrol make them less lolworthy though.

Could be a good shout if you're wanting family friendly space with a bit of shove. Looks pretty good too.

FFS how do you multi quote on this new fangled site?

Edbacon - Yes the Golf is what I should be aiming for and I was for a day or two but it honestly left me all depressed, I don't need a fancy car or a hot hatch but I do enjoy having a bit of fun.

Tom - Alfa floats my boat, I adore Alfa's (owned 4 and also a Lancia Intergrale) unfortunately they won't be reliable enough.

G-lar - Samm has a Renault Scenic so I don't need the space apart from for my man-sized body, I travel on a dual carriageway to work and back so would the Civic cause that much of an issue? I don't want to and won't spend past £7000.

Russ - Hi chum, we are all good thank you, LaLa is 2 next month and Dan is 8 this year and is now on the gifted and talented register, he gets the brains from his mum thats for sure. How are you and yours doing, I bet you are a bloody good teacher. I have absolutely shag all time to post my rambling bullshit on here anymore, that and I am knackered after work :(

Clowneh - CLOWNEH IS BACK!! (Leggy is as well isn't he?), a good call I think but like Wazz says I *would* be Mondeo man and they are just so, well, boring. Great cars but boring.

Trem,

Mk5 Golf GTi might be a good shout as suggested, that sort of money gets you:

Or a rather tidy BMW 330ci (always had a soft spot for them).

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3735233.htm

I have been looking at the mk5 Golf GTi, really like them but the ones worth seeing are too far away from me (Stoke) :(

I have just been reading about a car I didn't know existed and I really quite fancy one, like the normal t-sport but hmmmmm -

Don't buy a T-Sport trem they are awful a friend had one and had nothing but trouble, the Mazda 6 MPS would be alright though if you could handle the tax/fuel costs of a 2.3 Turbo (Personally i can't thats why im getting a MK V GTI)

Really? I have only read good things about how reliable they are, mind you I would never tell anyone to get a Volvo after the trouble I have had but apparently my engine issue is "unheard of" on a car with such low miles.

Leaning towards Mazda 3 MPS now *fap* - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...3aq/page/1/radius/1500/keywords/mps?logcode=p
