I spent a good 2 years forever returning a logitech mouce under RMA, I got 3 out of them, so will never ever return. They literally use dried pasta as button contacts.

Very happy with my razer basilisk, with optical sensors.
Well my MX Master 3 is the dog's bollox. Best productivity mouse ever. The scroll wheel is like nothing else on the market and it just feels so good. Decently weighty.

For gaming I use a Steelseries Prime Wireless. Lighter than the Logitech which is better for aiming.

How cold is the beer?

I'd say similar temperature and pint to the pub just up the road. Refills are a little more expensive than cans, 2L of Amstel is just over £8, but far cheaper than the pubs and nicer than the stuff out of a can.

Only slight limitation is you're restricted to beers from the Heineken range, so have a fridge full of that and Amstel at the moment, but got my eye on some Tiger and Lagunitas for the next order.

Anyone got any decent reccomendations for a new mouse and keyboard? I have an ASUS keyboard I'm quite fond of, but most of the letters are faded, and it's 10 years old and showing its age. Similar story with my mouse, a Razor Deathadder 3500 dpi. I think it's maybe 5 or 6 years old and not behaving as expected. The cushions at the bottom are wearing off, leading to an uneven scroll experience. Everything must be hardwired.

I picked up a Corsair K70 at the start of first lockdown and it's been great - don't use it for gaming but for typing it's superb. It replaced the daddy of keyboards, an IBM Model M and I haven't missed the old hectare at all, very similar feel imo.

It's paired with some sort of wireless Logitech mouse which again has been great. Batteries last forever and it's coped with much doomscrolling.

Decided to do another little upgrade on the Synology 1821+ added in a E10G18-T1 (10 Gbps Ethernet Adapter).

Anyone got experience with inflatable water craft? Thinking a Kayak probably.

This is well reviewed (checked out a couple on YT as well) but seems dangerously cheap?

What would you use it for?

I wouldn't trust my life with something from Amazon, it will likely be straight up Chinesium.

From a specialist

Edit, they don't carry much, my pack weight is sometimes 40kg+ if I take water.

I live a hundred yards or so from the river (Jubilee at Maidenhead) so just pottering up and down, nothing fancy.

Consider a second hand plastic kayak if you've got the storage space @Aoami. They're a bit more faff but loads more enjoyable, safer, easier to handle, less susceptible to wind etc. etc.

I'm taking mine to Anglesey on Saturday morning to go annoy some seals :)

I've thought about it. I do have the space but i'm worried that I wouldn't be arsed to carry it to the river.

Well that monitor was followed by a splurge on some new computer parts due tomorrow:

  • Intel Core i9-12900K
  • Asus ROG Strix Z690-E Gaming Wifi
  • Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB
  • Corsair iCUE H150i Pro XT RGB Liquid Cooler
  • Prolimatech PK-3 Paste

It'll be slightly delayed actually starting up since I had to order the LGA 1700 Retrofit mount of Corsair since it isn't in the box with the cooler.

Stuff being carried over:

  • Corsair 750D Case
  • Assorted Noctua Case Fans
  • NVidia 1070
  • Seasonic Focus Plus 850W PSU

Out of curiosity why a liquid cooler?
They are more expensive and not loads better than regular fan cooling.

It does look cool though

My current system runs an older AIO and they still tend to edge air coolers but more importantly those air coolers of a similar performance tend to massive, while my AIO is big as well the majority of it is located above the motherboard in a space allocated for such coolers in the top of the 750D case so it has minimal impact to the area around the socket as the cold plate is small.

Out of curiosity - are there *any* games out there that require a beefy PC any more?

Not really since more and more games are being built using one of the popular games engines like Unity or Unreal Engine there's nothing like a "can it run Crisis". These days it's not really about FPS, since even cheap cards can run at more than acceptable frame rates, it's about image quality. So if you want to run at 1080p, 1440p or 4K at Ultra settings.

Yep. I was hoping *something* was going to try to push the envelope but the best games are 1980's throwbacks now (gameplay was always king). I do miss the excitement of graphical advancement though.

In the 1990's they promised "real life" quality in a decade. We never thought they'd do it but it was fun. Then i the 2000's they said the same. In 2022 I can't see it happening before 2040, if ever. Certainly now there's the stagnation that's come with developers picking up Unity and not actually competing on "look what we can do".

There's nothing really new out there any more - even the AI of baddies is still pap. My best ever experience with AI is still Half Life, and that's 1998 ffs.

I think 1998 was probably peak game for me. Stuff today just fails to excite.

Star Citizen.

even a 5800x3d+3090 will only hit high 50fps, 12900k/5950x both in the mid 30s.
Might be playable by the time it comes out.

What was underestimated back then was that while hardware improved drastically and you could, in theory, create ever more realistic looking graphics the amount of time and resources required to do that exponentially increased. It's why AAA games take so long to make, require huge dev teams and cost so much to produce.

As for AI that is an especially hard problem to solve, and it still hasn't been. Essentially every games' AI has to be written by hand and is bespoke just to that game. It's why for example in Civ 5 the AI was praised but in Civ 6 it was shat on because it was essentially new code by a new team.

Well gaming wise I can just about get away with my 1070, but I intend have a look when the Nvidia 4000 series arrives what options are available.

Having just received the Corsair 1700 retrofit kit today I was moving towards completing the final parts, I grabbed the processor box opened up the funky packaging and well...it was empty. Most annoying and another delay.

Had a text from EE to say it was new phone time - was going to carry on with my Xperia 1 II as it's been brilliant - still lasts all day, still getting updates and really do struggle to fault it.

Of course, that didn't happen, as I've just ordered:

Clincher was the freee headphones offer, as I left my XM3's on a flight back from Texas.

I just bought one of these power banks (EB70):

1654670991192.png

Hopefully it will be some protection in the event of power cuts as we had a big one earlier in the year. It can power the freezer (worked for about 6 hours). Toaster. Laptops and screens. Router. 55 inch OLED and surround amp. Sadly not the coffee maker. Obviously not all at the same time. Most importantly, it will drive the pump controller on the oil powered aga for heating, hot water and cooking.

Its not quite a powerwall (wish I could afford) but it should help keep the lights on.

This last week: (Generic photo but exactly the same car) - 2016 Polo Match TSI, 35k miles and 1 previous owner. The whole Bluetooth audio thing is fun.

And assuming nothing explodes we should be moving here soon. Offer accepted etc.
