MP3/CD Car Players

Just bought an MP3 player for the car, can anyone tell me what format you write your MP3 cd's in? Is it just a normal data CD and you drop all the files in the root? Can you put them in directories?

Depends on the player I guess, but a lot of them require 8.3 names

What ^ he said with regards to directories. But I think you can just write the cd's as data cd's with files therein. I'm sure you could put them in folders too.. but that's all down to the player you got.

Which one did you get, how much, and let me know if it's decent when you try it.

Sony CDX-MP40.

Got it for 125 quid :D Should be around 200.

It looks ugly as hell in the pictures, but I can tell you that in the flesh it's actually a pretty good looking player.

So far used the CD and tuner, and it plays pretty nice, has everything I need, and it worked with my existing sony steering wheel joystick! Mega pleasing.

Hmm, if it can control a CD Change I'm sold.

edit: it does. *looks for spare change down the back of the sofa*

Data cds work fine in my Pioneer stereo.

I recommend you use folders to break it up a bit you can get lost with 100 odd mp3s all in the root dir.

I had a cheapo CD/MP3 player a while back (Memorex I think), it has since broken.

However, it was capable of reading both long filenames and organisation by directories so I would *expect* an expensive Sony thing to support it.

If it doesn't specify I'd suggest burning a CDRW one and finding out. The worst it can do is not play it.

Manual will tell you

Ive had a few mp3 head units in the past by various manufacturers and the manual has always given a tutorial of how to burn a cd and what it supports.

ive since moved on to a dension, none of this gay cd stuff ;)

My CDX-Mp30 works very well with Directories, it's easy to see where you are with Sony Mp3 players, you can do many things with what's being displayed on the LCD panel, the Mp30 still hasn't been surpassed for it's price imo.. (I mean the £160 mark, RRP).

The mp40 will replace it in the market quite soon by the looks of it, which I assume was the point.

Edit: I actually baught it over a year ago for £180, halfords didn't stop selling it under £240 I belive, at all.

Sorry to dig this thread up, but I have decided to buy a Sony CDX-Mp40 as well.

Where did you get such a good price Exor? The best I have found is £139.99, Still good but if it is available for £125 then so much the better.

A few MP3 headunits can have problems if the disc isn't finalised, but apart from that I think they tackle MP3s and directories with gusto. Some even support ID3 tags.

I've never seen an mp3 player ( :( ) and am curious... do in-car players let you browse through folders? How? Some kind of crude forward/backward LCD menu?

The up and down arrows on mine cycle through the folders. Root is the default dir if you have just left them loose on the cd. To open the folder I press right and it then lets me cycle up and down through the tracks.

Rb try here - http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/

£125 for the sony here, their shop is in leicester and I have bought from here.

The units are all a standard size afiak. The only thing to check is the facia, some are shaped to the dash, so that they are useless in other cars, Mrs Yucks Punto has a curved stereo front. If your existing stereo is "flat fronted" you will be fine.
Although places like Halfords sell curvy fronts now for aftermarket stereos.

Halfords will supply an adaptor, £10/£15. Same shape as the dash but with a rectangular orifice :)

Probably is Wij, as will the Galaxy be.

Currently Halfords is having a big sell off of old stock, so well worth a visit for cheap stuff. If you have a store with a Ripspeed section in it talk nicely to one of the 'specialists' in there and get them to put your name down on one of the display units to get a good sized discount.

The Facias unfortunatly will not be reduced, but they are only 10-15 quid as Yuck said. You may also need a wiring harness for a further 10.49, this connects between the iso standard plugs on the stereo, to the wiring harness on the car, which can be any of a number of weird and wonderful fitments.

For when reaching over to the stereo is just too much effort.

Not wise to shift your weight in an Elise when going 160mph, I'd assume. :(

Thanks Jis and Exor, :).

Order placed.

BTW what are ID3 tags? Will a disc burned with Nero using albums/selections in normal Windows folders disply track details correctly or do I have to do something else?
