I wasnt sure whether to stick this in the technation thing or not so i chose here.

Anyway, I just installed it and i think its absolutley brilliant, tons better than I.E. I know a few others here use it and i was wondering if anyone could reccomend a few plugins to install into it that are useful.

cheers

As you're no doubt aware, there are tonnes of plugins available. Something for every requirement. But, for the web developers and advanced browsers among you Web Developer is my extension of choice. Gives you the ability to enable/disable numerous elements of a web page, acquire information, easily validate to various W3C standards and even resize the window to see what a page looks like in various resolutions etc.

FireFox is quite simply, teh vin.

tabbed broswer extensions, adds a bit more to the whole tabs thing. Being able to undo a tab close is a godsend for idiots like me who are click happy.

Wait until you start finding pages that it won't load. Then you won't find it so wonderful.

Although I admit, when it works (99% of pages), it is superior to IE.

*gets his lighter*

And when it doesn't work, you can blame non-standards compliant code.

Tab browser extensions as has already been mentioned. It does make the browser noticbly more sluggish, but its worth it.

Once you switch over, you won't be going back to IE :p

its wubbly. Just the tab system can be a bit cumbersome. I want it to go back to my previous tab after closing one, instead it goes onto the next in line. Anyone know how to fix?

Lack of a resisable Plugin bar and movable toolbars make FireFox still lack a few features which I was accustomed to in IE.. and as for tabbed browsing... I'm so used to clicking between windows on the start bar tabbing almost becomes a hassle for me and I usually find it far slower... especially as you can just 'throw' your mouse to the bottom of the screen where it auto stops and then position it along for whichever window you want, compared to positioning the icon over a tab... I know that's barely any difference but I find it far faster to use multiple instances...

tabbed windows is far superior to multiple instances in my opinion, but each to their own :D

having happily used opera for sometime now, I think it's time to try firefox.

/me goes to download

bah, sorry about the double post, wouldn't let me edit :S

Firefox seems a lot crisper than opera, seems to run faster as well. Although the tab browser extension does slow it down slightly, but seems ok if you run it in light mode.

You can move the toolbars around, right-click > customize and then just drag buttons/menus/boxes wherever you want.

As for the the tabs thingy, just ctrl+1, ctrl+2 etc etc, it's a lot quicker than choosing buttons on the taskbar. With that and typeahead find (start typing the text of a link to select it then hit enter), ctrl+L for address bar, ctrl+k for search bar there's no need to even be touching your mouse let alone be whizzing it about.

get adblock installed, its a must :)
And there is an extension which allows you to disable flash animations unless you click on them. Essential to keep your sanity while browsing nowadays.

Adblock is great.

Really chaped my ass having to use some 3rd party device to block adds with IE.

Wub firefox, best browser i've used so far.

Is it me that just thinks that browsing the web should be a simple affair, without hassle of obtaining plugins, toolbars and all of that bullshit?

It really does seem like such an unecessary drawn out affair. There isn't even any good stuff on the web these days to browse.

Well you can browse the web without all that stuff. Some people like to change things though, liks stop popups etc etc. If you didnt have to get plugins it would be a nightmare, every possible standard/plugin would have to come built into each browser as standard (=megabloat) and every time one of them got updated you'd have to get the whole thing again. Plain html doesn't do everything people want, plugins are the only option.

I for one am all in favour of it, if I can make my usage easier and faster, and do it the way I want then great. The problem I have is on sites where I have to use a mouse :)

The one thing that really irks me is propreitary/non-standard code. Internet Explorer has a lot to answer for ;)

Wij: The "Click To View Flash" plugin is fairly obsolete now as Adblock pulls similar flash-blocking tricks.

Swift: I agree to some extent. The philosophy with Firefox is that - unlike the original Mozilla suite - the browser you download should be fairly barebones (similar, say to IE). For those who want advanced features, they can choose to add them. If you provide them by default then you have a bigger, bloatier browser - and that puts people off (c.f. Mozilla).

As for my extensions:
Tabbrowser + Adblock are both in there.

"All-In-One Gestures" are truely wonderful. Adds mouse gestures ala Opera. Try them, you wont go back.

"IE View", which allows you to right click a page and
"View in Internet Explorer". It's handy for when going to proprietry sites like Windows/Office Update, you can get to them in IE with one click. It takes out the hassle of running IE as a backup.

"User Agent Switcher" is quite useful - it means you can pretend to be Internet Explorer (again, as you can in Opera) which can open up some sites that employ "block out other browser" techniques. There're not many that need it though, can be useful for WebDev testing.

"Diggler" - ala Konquorer. Adds an "X" icon next to the address bar, which on clicking clears the address bar. Also has a larger menu full of handy address shortcuts. (e.g., it displays an option for the parent site, so I can be on FH, click Diggler and choose "www.freddyshouse.com"). Very handy.

Is it just me or are most of these plugins available in Opera by default ;)

Although I do use Firefox for its lovely javascript debugger.
