Mastering the Keyboard

Has anyone actualy managed to get to grip with the controls yet ?

I figured out last night how to change to the WSAD layout for moving - but still need to figure out how to move the "Cycle target" and "attack" keys/commands to something more usefull.

You can change to WSAD by going into the menu at the top right of the scree (think its middle mouse button to bring it up) then click on the << or >> arrows to change to Page 2 - theres also some options there to change the message colour

RED for taking damage - helps :)
BLUE for broadcasts
GREEN for friend chat

mmm starting to sound like DAOC

those few things with the arrow keys for camer are fine for me :)

Currently im on compact keyboard settings - so pressing the keyboard letters does things rather than typing in text.

W,S,A,D to move Q,E pan camera left and right - usefull when running

R,.F pan camera up and down - usefull to see over the grass and really handy being next to WSAD

then using the defaulkts - such as TAB to change target, and ENTER to accept things. Its working ok - but I still press the arrow keys sometimes to move, guess ill get over it.

wasd to move
ijkl to move camera
tab to change target
enter to brin up target menu (i.e check attack magic etc)
n to cancel that menu
and minus sign on the numpad for your mainmain menu

thats about all you need really to play the game :)
this is the compact setting ofc.
it reminds me of a ps2 pad translated on to keyboard

using the Numpad config now

8 up
2 down
4 left
6 righ

also found finally 9 and 3 zoom in/out that dam map

5 1st/3rd view
7 autorun
/ walk

f8 nearest target Ctrl A is handy for group fighting or assist

set my first macro for healing a helluva lot easier when grouped
*cough* until we get a regular White Mage

This is VERY close to what i have ended up with :-

Left hand (All keys are VERY easily reachable and well layed out for me)
WSAD to move
Q,E to pan camera left and right
R,F to pan camera up and down
TAB to select mob

Right Hand
Arrow keys to move around the menus
ENTER to select
# to cancel

You basicaly have two sets of controlls - remmeber that this interface needs to suit the PSX controllers too

1. Character movement (defaults to they keypad but you can change this to WSAD)
2. Camera movement & Menu movement (defaults to the arrow keys, but again you can change this to any standard letter keys)

Then theres stuff like ENTER and ESCAPE for accept and cancel

Pretty much it.

Yup ive got 2 adapters here that let me plug a PSX controller into the PC's USB socket

There is however a small delay on pressing the button and a reaction in game - also the fact you have to put down the pad to type, I tried it... but went back to the keyboard in the end :)

I even tried (gasp) macro express last night to try to remap CTRL+9 to a different key like HOME this should have allowed me to press HOME to cycle through NPC's in the area, much better location than using F8 as your right hadn is on the arrow keys - but alas it didnt work, i think END/HOME/DELETE/INSERT are used in game for something :(

Windows 2000 resource kit - remapkey.exe

Allows you to change the keyboard layout, gona try this tonight - and change F8 to the END key

so using the arrow keys to nagivate the attack menu system i can just move the finger up 0.5 inches and switch mob target - may prove to be usefull.

Switched from keyboard to PS2-pad, too, and I´m enjoying it, controls are much easier to handle now - and I haven´t noticed delays, so far (using Win-XP, no drivers needed).
