Lord of the Rings is *still* outstanding.

Ah we've had this discussion about the Alien films on these boards before, many times :)

I think Alien3 is superb - recaptures the atmosphere and tension of the first one (tbh I waver between liking 1 or 3 the most) - just one alien, it's scary as fuck, dark, brooding, menacing etc. Aliens was just Rambo with monsters, still a good film but more one for the teenagers in my opinion.

There's so many levels to Alien3 - it's very allegorical - there's the Alien infection :: AIDS allegory which is quite detailed and repeatedly alluded to throughout the film, there's the class struggle bit ( oppressed peons vs faceless corporation) and there's the deeply religious overtones culminating in Ripley's crucifixion pose as she falls into the fires and the whole church & state bit.

Aliens is just a boys 'n'toys adventure story that challenges nothing.

Well i suppose it is the action in aliens that makes it so appealing, i was a teenager when i first saw the film, so i supopose you could be right, although i find it just as good now at the age of 22 as i did when i first saw it on TV as a young teenager.

I like the way at the start the marines are all cocky and think there gonna breeze in, find nothing wrong after a hunt about, shag a few colonists and get back home. Then when things go wrong you get the different reactions, like Hudsons basic inability to cope, Hicks cool calm way of dealing with things, and Ripleys seen it all before attitude.

Maybe it is just a brainless film, maybe i'm just a brainless person who likes brainless films, but hey i like what i like :)

Aliens3 is ok per say. I can see what your saying, but it just didn't have the excitement or interest that the second one gave me. The fact Ripley basically spent the whole of 2 saving newt only for her to get killed at start of 3rd put me off a lot, but then i suppose the Aliens filsm aren't exactly supposed to be Disney happy ever ever films :) Then as i say they should have ended it there, as a final film Aliens3 was ok, but as a film in the ongoing storyline it wasn't as it just meant that they had to come up with a stupid plot to get a 4th one done.

I wasn't questioning the validity of the fact that they can smell their enemy, Oh Wise One With Infinite Knowledge Of Everything. I was tired and wondering if the word I used should have been smelled or smelt.

Alien Ressurection is one of the biggest piles of arse juice I've ever watched. Aliens is the best of the series for me, Alien coming a close second. What you have to remember is that they are different kinds of film, although Aliens actually shit me up more than Alien did.

LoTR is just magic, pure and simple. The book was heavy going and also veered from very simplistic in its story telling to becoming almost unreadable in parts ("...and Gandalf spake unto her" etc etc). I agree with Kez in that Tolkein was crap at writing about battles, or indeed any sort of action that took place, but this has enabled Peter Jackson free reign with his film making in these areas.
Thats why the scenes in Moria and particularly the death Boromir were so brilliant.

However, the book is a great peice of story telling in its own right, and what is also worth noting is that people these days tend to have a lot less imagination than before and need things explaining to them in no uncertain terms. Thats why there are cries of "its crap" and the rest.

The minds eye of the 21st Century isn't what it was, if you get my meaning.

Just finished watching Lord of the rings and I dont mind what other people think of it but personally i found it amazing. In the beginning some parts dont grip you, but the end is what little fantasy's look at and want to be when they grow up.
If you liked it at the cinema I definatly recommend you buy the DVD.

The first disc plays in PDvd ok, but the second one freezes just before the menu appears.

Ripped both discs to the hard drive and they both play ok that way (DivX version of the film took 8 hours to encode and weighs in at 1.4Gbs, just small enough to fit on 2 cds \o/ ).

NvDVD has no problems playing either disc.

Aliens was better than Alien simply because of the higher action quotient, more humour (Hudson I wub j00) and it had sections just as dark and brooding (read as: suspenseful) as the original.

I like Alien Resurrection mainly because I love films by that particular director (Jean-Pierre Jeunet) and his particular style, eg: La Cité des enfants perdus, Delicatessen. Usually he works with Marc Caro, but his solo films (Amelie, AR) are I feel better, because Caro has a tendency to be very very fucking surreal in his vision.

What bitrate did you use?

I'm assuming DivX 5.0.2 was used as the codec here... :)

Ahh, I resized mine to 996*424.

Bitrates:

Audio: 128kbps / MP3
Video: 139kbps / DivX 5.0.2, 977kbps encoding bitrate
FPS: 25

CladDVDxp & Virtualdub = teh win!

:)

I was talking about LOTRs.

As for Aliens vs Alien, I prefer the original any day. But then I saw it at the cinema when it came out and I hadnt seen anything as good before that so that colours my view. I think the original version of Aliens is better than the directors cut which loses pace somewhat with the extras.

LOTR on the other hand suffered from cutting out major story elements that are important to understanding later events so hopefully some of this will be restored in the extended version, but alas not Tom Bombadil :(. It was such a disappointment to see Aragorn just turn up with some swords saying Here you are. Just didnt fit right.

Im am so happy that they left out tom bombadil, that part of the book was so 'gay' but when are they gonna show the re-forging of the sword?

God knows, because he isn't using it at the battle of Helms Deep.

PS: Tom Bombadil was a waste of fucking space, so utterly boring. Thank christ Jackson excised him from the film.

There are a lot of extra scenes in the extended version - the receiving of gifts from Galadriel, Gimli falling in love with her etc.

DWARF PR0N !!1

Seriously though... Most of the first book was written in a more kiddies style, like the Hobbit. Oh, and he left Tom Bombadil in because he represented a different attitude entirely. Neither good nor evil really. He just had no desire for power or anything beyond his realm. A lesson you see.

But he was a bit gh3y :/

I didn't, I corrected the aspect ratio.

The DivX came out as something like 424*608, so it was very squashed up. So I amended it to 1:2.35, which is proper widescreen format.

Well, 720 x 576 is the resolution of a PAL DVD. If you want to correct aspect ratio, leave the horizontal alone (because it's a lot easier for the encoder to get rid of pixels than it for it to try to add them) and change the vertical res. So, 720 x 576 would resize to 720 x 304 (with a 0.1% aspect ratio offset: ie, unnoticable) and it will look a lot better. :)

Might well try that, but it took the bastard 8 hours to encode the first time, so I'll leave it until I'm going out or just really really bored :)

Not so good.

Totally agree, crap line, nearly spoils the ending.
Bombadill annoyed me in the book and I reckon he was only written in to pad it out a bit. Thank god he was left out of the film.
Graham Norton would have played the part well though.

Thin Red Line: liked it, but isn't "awesome" as some put it. Has very interesting character elements in it htough and was a good watch.

LoTR is still the daddy though. Only film that made me forget I was in a cinema, didn't notice it was nearly 3 hours long at all.
Bollox to all of you who think different. :p
