Ah we've had this discussion about the Alien films on these boards before, many times
I think Alien3 is superb - recaptures the atmosphere and tension of the first one (tbh I waver between liking 1 or 3 the most) - just one alien, it's scary as fuck, dark, brooding, menacing etc. Aliens was just Rambo with monsters, still a good film but more one for the teenagers in my opinion.
There's so many levels to Alien3 - it's very allegorical - there's the Alien infection :: AIDS allegory which is quite detailed and repeatedly alluded to throughout the film, there's the class struggle bit ( oppressed peons vs faceless corporation) and there's the deeply religious overtones culminating in Ripley's crucifixion pose as she falls into the fires and the whole church & state bit.
Aliens is just a boys 'n'toys adventure story that challenges nothing.
