Lord of the Rings is *still* outstanding.

If the book has a great story, well written and the characters have depth and grow during the story, it cant be bad literature.

You may not like the style or the fact that it is fantasy writing but thats a different issue...

Indeed. In fact I think I am getting the Limited Edition of some crap called Memento this week. :p
What an awesome piece of film making Memento is, I think on the dvd it plays it the right way as well(its shot in sequences from the end to the beginning), I think I will buy LOTR although I'm not sure if I liked it first time round, gotta have it though.

Well reminded. Haven't tried watching Momento 'the-right-way' yet. I'll have to look up how to do it...

Most mind-boggling of all, however, is the "Memento Mori" option in the special features menu, which allows you to play a specially re-edited version of the movie in chronological order, beginning with the end credits running backwards!

I didn't like the books either, maybe because they couldn't keep my attention, I would find myself reading it and then I would forget the last page.

Great!!

I found Memento quite confusing. I have worked out most of it but there are a few little bits which I cant seem to tie up

Not read LOTR, bought the book but can't be fucked to start reading it. Anyway, the movie ruled.

Oh, and 1984 is the best novel ever. George Orwell owns j00 all.

Where did you read this? I've been checking amazon.co.uk for ages and there's been no release date. This is great news, can't wait :)

I wouldn't recommend it; it tries to be an epic journey (with adventure! and love! and excitement! and fun!) but ends up stumbling around the muddy trails of better writers.
The fact that Tolkien can spend three chapters building up a battle, only to wrap it up in one sentence ("and they rode to victory") speaks volumes. And half the fucking trilogy is goddamn italics; where some initially interesting character wanders off into cunting elfish song. I'd learnt to skip the italics habitually by the third book.

As I type this, I've spied a discussion about it on IRC. So I'll paste it.

20:19:49 <Kainz> saw lord of the rings for the first time today
20:20:01 <Kainz> dodgy ending :/
20:20:15 <Pakman> well thats cos the book is a bit shite
20:20:27 <Kainz> arr never did get to read it
20:20:42 * Kainz watches disc2
20:23:06 <Pakman> thing about lotr is, people read the book realise its full of good ideas and then throw the plot away cos its a bit carp

Unfortunate as it is, I agree with Pak. The book is riddled with good ideas and essentially could've been good, though the plot is strikingly mediocre and obscured by ridiculous tangents.

Still, a fuckload better than any other movies last year. I've had the book sat next to my monitor for about 6 months, it's probably shrivelled up.

I knew soebody else would appreciate this. :)

The Dreamworks site has anounced a US release on 5 November, the BBC are a bit more vague, so I can't be sure of the UK region 2 release. A Google search throws up a list of similar info.

Also, I have all ten episodes + 'Making Of' (5.6GB worth) on my HD. It'll be nice to get proper quality versions.

Fs, people, we need to sort this out before it gets any worse

The word is Film. Plural, Films. We are not American, we shall not use that ghastly word beginning with an M :p

Repeat after me, i liked that film. I thought it was a poor film. The film was not as good as the book.

FILM!

Band of Brothers beat the shit out of Saving Private Ryan, hands down. It's all very vague now, but I cannot wait to see it again, I intend to sit down and watch them in one go :)

Yeah, it'll a long haul. Takeaway for lunch and dinner. Buy plenty of drinks. Should be fun.

If not I'll watch it bit by bit for a week or something, it's just one of those things you HAVE to watch in sequence. Maybe I'm eccentric :)

Lord of the rings was fucking dull, I actually fell asleep half way through and I wasn't tired..

The only saving grace was the shots of the scenery, quite nice they were. Otherwise, quite shit.

And if you're looking for a good ww2 film, see The Thin Red Line.

Quite, quite astounding.
