You're probably right, but it kind of depends who's looking. The Skyline is an awesome car, and the Evo's not bad (is that the one from The Fast and The Furious?), but the Porsche is gorgeous. There's one in the window of the Porsche dealer on the A4 in West London, and it looks absolutely stunning. Maybe not as in your face as an Enzo or an SLR, but much classier.

Judging from the review of the Sagaris and Tuscan 2 on 5th gear it still has a problem with build quality, both the cars had bits fall off.

I do love the sound of many of the TVRs although I do love the sound of a few other cars like the Merc SLR McLaren.

Oh and a list of sports cars I've driven. I was quite lucky at the age of 17 that my father was head of tyre development for Michelin, so for a present to celebrate passing my test, he let me play with some of Michelin's fleet, including a...

BMW M3 Evo (E36) Rapid, handled pretty well (great for powerslides), steering felt wrong tho, wasn't entirely sure if it was connected to the front wheels.
Lancia Delta Integrale - Don't have enough room to explain just how good this car is. If I ever buy a classic car, it will be one of these.
Mazda RX-7 - Liked the rotary engine, but like most Japanese performance cars, rest was instantly forgettable. Handled well tho.
BMW 840Ci - great tourer, crap sports car.
Oh yeah and a Golf VR6 as well. I think that's where the Golf bug started (prefer my 16v tho, almost as quick and less weight in the nose, dives into bends much faster).

There was a 911 there as well but they wouldn't let me near that, can't say I blamed them. But instead of a go in that one of Michelin's test drivers took me out round the banked oval at their test facilities in Clermont-Ferrand without touching the steering wheel. I was impressed.

And if you think that was pretty neat for a 17 year old, you should have seen the work experience I got sent on. Hint: He also controlled their competition department, and I was working the weekend of the 1996 British GP - although Mich weren't in F1 at the time, they provided rubber for pretty much the entire BTCC field, so I got to meet most of the drivers.

So basically I think I know what I'm talking about.

I know thats your opinion and I can't really argue with your taste. I think you're wrong though, the Porsche is easily a more impressive car, even to your average Chav.

I did have the pleasure last year of being able to have a good sniff around the GT from inside the ropes (the bastards wouldn't let us open the doors though), and I can tell you its an utterly astoundingly gorgeous car.

Modded jap cars are great, but IMO they really don't compare in any way shape or form with a supercar like the Porsche.


As for the fifth gear thing with the Saggyarse and the Tuscan2, don't forget those were press cars, and would have been hammered. I have no doubt that many journos would have been pulling those controls left right and centre to see if the build quality was any good. And quite honestly, on my 11 year old Chimaera, the build quality is actually better than both the Volvos I owned in previous years. There in honestly not one single squeak or rattle from inside or outside the car, its pretty well put together.

We'll not mention the sticky temperature gauge though, or the odometer that 'clicks' every 1/10th of a mile Or the mirror glass that fell out the other day (previous owner bodged it). Or the alternator that died a couple of weeks ago. Or the rear window that had rotten stitching (age related tbh). Oh, and lets say nothing about the rough idleing when its cold (sounds cool though, all gurgly and cock-whapping)

Oh and theres a knob under the steering wheel that falls out, but I don't use it much

Stop making excuses for them, a prestige product manufacturer like TVR should realise how important the media are for projecting their image to potential buyers. It wouldn't take much to hold press cars back between tests just to ensure everything is in correct working order and "as new". Ignoring a broken windscreen wiper (go go Italian incompetence), when was the last time you saw or heard of bits falling of a Farrari or Lambo in a road test. Even Alfas seem to stand up to a journo's thrashing pretty well (I so want a GT right now. In black they look teh sex), I don't see why TVR can't manage it.

Anyway, for sheer "couldn't look at any other car in its presence even if I tried" appeal, there is a new king in my book.

TVR's main selling point is the price - supercar performance at saloon car prices. So what if a knob falls off an early production example? The Sagaris is a £50k car that drives and performs like something twice the price. How many cars have you seen on Top Gear where panels are loose, gearboxes break, flappy paddle selectors don't work, etc etc? LOTS. There have been plenty of instances of Fezzas and Lambos not working in road tests, the main difference is that they're backed by huge corporations - TVRs are made in a factory in Blackpool by a small dedicated workforce with no major backers.

My Audi TT, made by a German company with supposedly high standards was a total lemon. My rock solid 2 Volvos were plagued with minor electrical faults.

The only companies that make generally 100% reliable cars are Japanese in origin, and even they're not perfect.

The problem is that TVR have a rather undeserved reputation for poor reliability. You ask anybody about TVR, they'll all say the same thing 'ooo made out of cardboard' 'oooo dodgy build quality' - yet none of these people have any experience whatsoever with the marque. They've just heard pub tales about "a mate who knows a mate who had one of those TVR things and it wouldn't start". The people who tend to fall foul of this are those who treat them as an everyday car - not looking after the chassis, not letting the engine warm up, not changing the oil regularly, skimping on the service costs (which are high). Its the same thing that affects Lotuses, Nobles, Ultimas, Caterhams, Morgans etc. You don't just get in a TVR in the morning and drive off, its not a car you just use to get from A to B without careful thought.

There are a great many people with TVRs who have zero problems with them. You just don't hear from them, because well why would you? People don't complain when nothing goes wrong.

Oh and I tell you what Bodhi, you may think you have experience of some fast cars, but if you went for a spin in mine you'd have your dick out and be ejecting Brasso all over the windscreen (or your face because of the acceleration). You just haven't experienced raw power until you've sat in a proper British sports car.

TVR's sound best, Elises corner best, Jap cars go quick, corner quick and don't break down, and Golfs are sooooo boring, but I'd have one for the missus as they're pretty good cars all the same.

I like peoples misconceptions, more than a few people have thought my 25k when new toy would have been something like 50k, because they put the name of Lotus up there as something really exclusive. This makes me smile, but when I point out, no air-con (heavy), no abs (heavy), no leccy windows (heavy) they start to get the idea.

Horses for courses really. Ideally I'd have a garage with some Italian Supercar, 360 Modena probably, A ridiculous Hypercar, Enzo or Macca F1, nice new S2 Exige, and an S class Merc for just getting to places a long way away. But that's not gonna happen now is it? So I have my toy, I love my toy, and I can respect everyone elses choice of favourite toy, can we have a group car hug now
