That's clearly bollocks. If a car costs 370 grand(!) as the Koenigsegg does, you've a right to expect it run for more than 200 miles at a time, and you should expect to be laughed at when it doesn't. Porsche can make reliable supercars (a 340K Carrera GT will be just as reliable as a 40K Boxster), so there's no excuse.

Erm I think you've missed the point here. Supercars are not engineered for reliability. They are designed to impress the hell out of everybody, and go very very fast. Thats it. People who pay 6 figures for a supercar don't particularly care if it breaks down, thats all part of the fun.

You on the other hand would be massively pissed off, because you wouldn't be able to call up a hire car and pootle down the mountains to the dock, and climb on board your boat, and let the local garage do the 5th rebuild on your engine - because you can't afford to.

If I could afford 370K for a supercar, I could afford the yacht and I'd still be pissed off with proles laughing at me. Of course people care if it breaks down, don't be ridiculous. This isn't the 1970s, even rich people expect things to work. And as I said, Porsches don't break down, even Ferraris and Lambos don't break down anymore, so there's no excuse.

Yeah but Jeremy Clarkson called it the best handling car on sale today at any price, and the engine noise alone is worth 60K. No air-con? Please, stay out of these kinda discussions. Performance cars are not rated on whether they've got fucking air con or not. If they are the Ferrari F40 is like the worst performance car ever, and we all know that's a load of bollocks.

The Koenigsegg only arrived on the back of a trailer because the police impounded it due to the driver repeatedly exceeding 200mph all the way across the USA. It did break down a couple of times yes, it didn't seem too happy with a sustained 240mph cruise. It still made it further than you average Aston would. The new Koenigsegg CCR is insane, one of the evo hack span it trying to floor it at 170mph.....IN A STRAIGHT LINE!!!! It's all about the new Bugatti tho. 1000bhp, 252 mph, 0-124 in about 7 seconds. Even Macca drivers wont see which way it went.

Hah! You've clearly never actually driven a fast car with no aircon any distance (and before you ask - I have, in a 968 Clubsport and its a fucking nightmare; there's no fun in driving across France if you end up a puddle of sweaty water at the other end). For all the pub talk shit and Jeremy Clarkson bollocks, most people in the real world don't just drive their cars at track days, they have to live with them. The CSL is just a toy, and if I was going to buy a toy, I'd buy one that didn't look like a tarted up repmobile, great engine noise or not.

And I can't believe you're getting all moist about the Veyron; possibly the most overhyped car in history. Why do people get all excited about these irrelevant monsters? You or I could never extract the most out of them and neither could 99% of the people who buy them. The engineer in me is far more impressed by the purity of an Elise than something like a Veyron, that just screams "vulgar tossermobile"

This essentially sums you up.

Try repeating that uninformed comment to the head mech/electrical engineer at ferrari or aston martin.

Well I drove to Switzerland in August without air-con, sat at about 120-130 for most of the way didn't really have a problem. If I got hot I opened the window a bit. Hardly rocket science now is it?

And who honestly cares if you can't extract the maximum from a Koenigsegg or Bugatti? I can't really think of any situation where you need to, both of them at 7/10ths will be plenty fast enough for anyone. Pretty sure you'd never get bored of getting to 124mph in 7 seconds either.

Ridiculously over the top cars make the world a much better place. Long may they continue.

(Mainly cos they'll keep pissing people like you off. To those about to buy a Veyron, we salute you.)

P.S Big G I fucking love Sniff Petrol, the dude who writes it has a column in evo each month as I'm sure you've seen. Never fails to raise a laugh or three. I'm pretty sure it wasn't just the Autocar test car that came back drenched in spunk tho hehe. Every review I've read of it has been dribbling pretty much all the way through.

Since when was an Aston Martin ever a supercar?

Woohoo. All bow down to your uber-hardness. CSL is still a tarted up repmobile.

Hold on, you've just spend most of this thread slagging off Astons because they're not hard-core enough (after all they 'only' do about 190) and then justify wankmobiles like the Veyron because '7/10s is plenty fast for everyone'. If you can't think of a situation where you need 1000bhp, why bother? The whole hypercar thing is just willy waving - the veyron was Ferdinand Piech's vanity project. Its just not clever. I love cars and I love performance cars, but the whole (mainly German) horsepower race is just sad - its like they know the party's going to be over soon and they're fiddling while Rome burns.

You're wrong, they don't piss me off, when they do something that moves the art of making cars forward. The McLaren F1 was a masterpiece, as is the Enzo.

The Veyron pisses me off because its an unintelligent design built to impress people like you who don't know any better, so VW can say "our dick's bigger than yours, Mercedes, Ford, whoever" and so it can have the best horsepower figure in Top Trumps, and so the Sultan of Brunei can have another car he doesn't drive in his palace. Its not even good looking for fuck's sake. Where's the mainstream car maker that's building a car that's as light as an Elise, as easy to live with as a Toyota and as fast cross-country as a 911? Now that would be impressive; instead we get "I know, lets bolt on another turbo." Pathetic.

Of course this whole thread is hypothetical as nobody here can drive any of these cars to their limits. So in reality we should all just get 1.6 crapboxes and bigger penises.

Does 0-100mph in 10 secs not count as a supercar?

Bearing in mind the luxury that comes with it. How does one define supercar? Tbh, i'm not entirely sure what defines a supercar - is it speed alone?

Granted the Mclaren F1 is 6 seconds, the SLR 6.2, the Koenigsegg in 7.1 - but surely they're in the realms of hypercar?

Well I realise this is entirely open to debate, but my idea of a supercar is:

1) Very fast and very beautiful
2) Wholly impractical
3) Hideously expensive to buy
4) Hideously expensive to run
5) Rare
6) Unforgiving

The original GT40 (and the modern one to an extent) is a supercar. As are the F40 and F50 and Enzo. As is the Carrera GT, Macca F1, and the Kernissgehgeheggggg......as is the Cerbera Speed 12 (although theres only 1 of them).

The Aston just isn't in the same league. Its a very fast, very beautiful car, but its basically a fantastic grand tourer. I'm not slagging it off in any way, I'm just saying that IMO its designed around a totally different philosophy to something like an F40, which is basically a road-going F1 car.

Skoda vRS' are surprisingly quick cars actually :).

I have a vid of a Fabia vRS doing 0-60 in about 6-ish seconds. Not bad for a 1.9 diesel.

An air-con-less Golf GTi 16v. Not that it matters really they all get just as hot in the cabin.

Think you two have different ideas about what is defined as a performance car, esp when you consider the topic :)

Do-they-fuck. A 968 Clubsport has a fucking great transmission tunnel and a rear transaxle. Its also a small space, with minimum sound (and therefore heat) -deadening, just like an M3 CSL. Go away, drive some real cars, and come back when you know what the fuck you're talking about. Cock.

My car has no aircon. It does however have a roof which comes off. Which is nice.

Oh, and the gearstick and handbrake get a bit hot sometimes. Usually when my right foot weighs a lot.

My car has air con, it has a roof rack, it carries all the shopping and luggage and I would say it does 0-60 in under 5 seconds now.

Like I said earlier, JAP CARS AER TEH WIN!!!!

Skoda RS are quick btw, very torquey(is that a word or a place?)
