one has to wonder why this crawing for non smoking establishments didnt result in there being plenty of them before any legislation :)

Because, unfortunately in groups of people there are usually 1 or 2 smokers at least who used to whinge if they couldn't smoke where they were going, necessatating everyone ending up in a smoking environment. I know, i used to be one of those smokers.

As a smoker I have no problem with the smoking ban at all. As a few of my mates and my gf are non smokers, I always go outside for a cig anyway, so nothing new for me
i'm not against the idea of a smoking ban at all, but the government once again has blown things waaay out of proportion

The current implimentation(sp?) in the UK is nothing short of joke

The problem with smoking is that it isn't a personal thing. When someone smokes everyone around them also smokes because they are breathing in all the smoke. Its a selfish thing to do more than anything.

It is going to be great to go out on a night out and not come home smelling like an ashtray. To someone who smokes I bet they don't notice the smell but to someone who doesn't smoke when you get home the smell on your clothes is quite bad.

i was refering to the fact that you arent allowed to smoke in a smoking lounge anymore, rather than smoking in general :)

must admit i find it very hypocritical to focus so entirely on potential risk at the end users environment.

theres only a plethora of other industries where a tougher legislation would mean much more difference in annual bodycount.

its show off legislation made by crap politicians who wouldnt know a sound legal principle if it kicked them :)

not to mention how silly this sounds comming from politicians who normally are happy to argue the benefits of the free market.

/em in realization that rhetorical questions doesnt cut it

reading through this post some things i think

Having a smoking bar and a non smoking bar wouldnt work. Think about the group of friends you go out with, i know in my half smoke and half dont, does that mean we cant go out to the same places together, i think its perfectly fine for everyone to go to the same bar and the smokers go outside for 5 mins to have a smoke then come back in, if there were smoking and non smoking bars then both people lose really, your smoking friends can go to a smoking bar but it will have split the group

Also Someone getting drunk and punching you isnt a passive effect from alcohol thats a result of a combination of alcohol and attitude/personality
Second hand smoke is a passive result as no matter how nice the person is its still going to effect everyone around them.

I dont think you can compare eating/drinking to smoking at all

Thanks to recent smoking ban in Finland I wont go into smoke-free pub ever again (luckily two of my favourite places got two extra years before the ban hits ;p) - it instantly changed the pub-culture completely ;< Ah well, going to have more home parties now which I preferred anyway :p Smaller than 100 people pubs should be able to choose wether they let their customers to smoke or not, imo.

And for the record I havent' smoked for 5-years.

I quit smoking, wasn't easy, but doable..

If I walk by a smoker now, I can smell the smoke clearly even when they are not smoking...

If I walk past a smoker outside who is smoking a cig, I hold my breath as I pass them..

Still, I am a capitalist at heart, I know and appreciate the values of capitalisme and all the wonders it have given the free western world, and this is NOT a step in the right direction, of freedom.

As I stated back when I was a smoker, any non-smoker/anti-smoker out there could open a non-smoking bar/pub/resturant/club whenever they wanted before the ban, but they simply didn't...

After the ban, NOBODY can open a smoking bar/pub/resturant/club no matter how much they want to and whatever they do...

Why take the freedom of choise and independence away from the people?

half my friends are smokers so before i could either go sit in a pub on my own and be smoke free or go with my mates and endure smoke... hardly as black and white as you portray it.

so your friends are too selfish to put their ciggies away even tho it bothers you, the government should intervene?

So because YOU choose NOT to go alone when you had the chance to do that, now your friends have to LOOSE the option to go alone?

I see how it is not as black and white as I say, you are plain selfish, thats all there is to it...

I have yet to see any non-selfish reasons for the ban...

"But I work as a bartender.."
-Don't choose that kind of job then!
"But it was my only choise, i am student and need money!"
-If you can't be assed to take another student job with other hours, that is YOUR problem, there are plenty out there, I did a half-assed search for mine and got offered 4 in no time, and selected one that fit me, even through the hours sucks, it keeps me in the green.

Jesus christ a smoker talking about being selfish, you're comments are SO bias its almost making me angry.

Whats not selfish about filling my lungs with carcagens with your filthy fucking habbit.

I am glad about the smoking ban, I went to play poker at the pub last night and didn't end up smelling of smoke at the end...BLISS.

I'm so not selfish that i dont moan when they all smoke around me and damage my health.

If they want to kill themselves with a fucking stupid filthy habit then so be it, don't inflict it on me, just go outside instead and don't be so fucking lazy. OH LOOK YOU HAVE TO NOW WHAT A SHAME :D

I've still yet to see a good non-selfish reason why people are so adament at opposing the ban.

Because they'll get cold mates :( boo fucking hoo. Smokers can piss off outside, people don't go out to a bar to get cancer. For years now, that is exactly what you have been doing giving people who don't even know you and just want to go out and have a good time a chance to get a terminal disease. How you can think people who don't smoke are selfish because they support the ban is beyond belief.

I like the smoke in pubs because its the main thing in forming a warm atmosphere. I'm fully awared it is harmfull for my health. Same thing with clubs playing music so fucking loud you have to yell when ordering drinks - main thing in making the atmosphere and bad for your health.

Maybe they can figure out some machines to form non-harmfull-cigarette-like-smoke for pubs? That would fix this fuck up, imo.

Ahem... I want to point out again, I don't smoke, you are a non smoker, you opinion is bias, mine might be too as an ex-smoker, but if any of us is currently speaking in a biased way, it is you

Reposting, it is about us living in a capitalistic world, I favour capitalisme, the opposit, communism, didn't work out so great for the Russians, even through it looks nice on paper.

So the reason I am against a state ban, is that is should be up to the owners of the establishments to choose how their bar/pub/club/restaurant should be with rules such as smoking, drinking, music, etc, not the state...

Before the ban, any of you, the majority (you claim) who was against this and hated it, was all free to make a non-smoking establishment, true capitalisme...

Give me one good reason why this was not done as the answer??

The reasons I always hear is:

"People won't go there"
-Well, then you don't want non-smoking enough
"But my friends smoke and we have to go somewhere they like to go out"
-Tell your FRIENDS to live with it and to come to the non-smoking place with you, if they want to hang with you, instead of telling EVERYBODY to do it?

EDIT: Just have to add that I love how you just assumed I smoke due to me being against the ban, Gamah, really mature, when you could have looked at the top of page to find out I don't...
