The reason for the smoking ban in public places wasn't to prevent people damaging their health, it was to prevent people from damaging other people's health through second hand smoke, there's a difference. While i'm completely against the nanny state, it's not an all out ban, it's just stopping smoking in pubs etc.
Saying that now banning people eating food and drinking alcohol will inevitably follow seems a bit far fetched. Junk food won't he completely banned, possibly it may be restricted in that the contents will have to be decent, however this is hardly a bad thing. Secondly saying they're going to ban drinking next, well that's not going to happen in our life times for sure. It's been tried and it's failed. Too much public uproar and huge rises in crime rates came from it.
